Melbourne Work Experience Camp
At the time of going to print I am unable to confirm what placements will be available for the Melbourne Work Experience Camp in the week May 1st – 5th. Boundless, a not-for-profit organisation, have been sourcing work placements and organising this camp for the Alliance schools. The cost of the camp will be approximately $160. Families who qualify for a healthcare card may use their Victorian Government Camp and Excursion funding to pay for this.
Students interested in advertised opportunities (expected tomorrow or early next week) will need to apply for positions straight away. They’ll do that by completing an application (available from Mr. Crosbie in the SLC or via email) and submitting it with their resume. Details of the positions available will be posted on the Wanganui Park Secondary College Careers Facebook page, also at www.wanganuiparkcareers.com and on the student bulletin read out in HG each morning and via a XUNO message to all Year 10’s. It is an experience reserved for Year 10 students, in the past we have had a limited number of Year 11’s complete it but it interferes too much with VCE studies.
The work experience camp will involve:
- students applying for specific places with specific companies between Tues 14th – Fri 17th March
- being interviewed for those positions (some time shortly after applications)
- arrangement forms, camp permission and medical forms to be due before the end of term
Students will stay with supervising teachers in hostel style accommodation, Melbourne Discovery, in the CBD and commute to their place of work via public transport. Most students will be in workplaces with one or more other students. All students will either initially be accompanied to their place of work by a teacher or at least shown how to get there. Students will be visited on site at their workplace by a teacher at some point through the week.
La Trobe University
La Trobe’s main campus is located at Bundoora (Melbourne), and has campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and of course our local campus Shepparton. La Trobe turns 50 this year!
‘EXPERIENCE LA TROBE’ – How can you find out about studying at La Trobe University? Experience La Trobe provides an opportunity to attend workshops, lectures, and seminars whilst being exposed to areas of the university not usually available on Open Day. You’ll be able to talk to current academics and students to find out what their dream career is really like. Parents can attend the parents’ session if they wish covering topics like university costs, courses and admissions. When: Melbourne: 9.30am – 4.30pm, Fri 7 April; Country campuses have Experience Days later in the year. Construction Induction card
Students participating in the Construction Induction card training must report to the Boardroom beside Mr Tanner’s office after morning roll call on Wed 15th March with their student ID card (as photo ID). They must have already paid the $90 for the course at the main office and returned all forms to Mr. Crosbie in the SLC. The required testing will be completed at the end of the days training from about 2:30 until 3:00. It’s suggested that students bring their lunch on the day as breaks for lunch may be different to canteen availability.
Events being run by RMIT for our students
Ready Set Design
Now in its sixth year, Ready Set Design is a series of three workshops for students in Year 11 and 12 where they can learn about careers and tertiary programs in design, develop their folio, and practice their interview and presentation skills. Workshops are held in the April, June and September school holidays. We recommend that students attend all three sessions to get the most out Ready Set Design. Registrations are now open for Workshop 1 (Design Bytes), which will be held on Monday 3 April. Registrations for Workshops 2 and 3 will open later in the year, and we will advise you when students can register for these (students who register for Workshop 1 will also receive a notification). How to register: visit https://rmitsnapevents.eventbrite.com.au
Study Skills 101
This workshop, held on Tuesday 4 April will offer current VCE students strategies to approach their exams and assessments with confidence. The session will cover the differences between studying at high school and university and how to deal with procrastination, as well as tips on writing essays under exam conditions. Cultural Care Au Pair
This week we had a visit from Sara of Cultural Care Au Pair. There were male and female students from Year 10-12 who attended. It certainly seems like a great opportunity to travel to the United States and work for 12 months. While you are there you will complete at least 72 hours of study of your choice. This study can be in any area e.g. a sport or recreation like snowboarding or just about anything else. Participants pay a fee of about $1200, this covers return airfares, training (like first aid, childcare skills). Au Pairs are paid as a nanny by the family they work for. If you are interested in working as an Au Pair, you may consider attending a Cultural Care Au Pair information session. The company assists students to find placements in America. Dates are – Geelong - 1 April and Melbourne – 8 April. For information and to RSVP, go to http://culturalcare.com.au/
