LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library

Hi everyone, welcome to week 6 in the library. This week we are featuring another Australian author, Kim Howarth. In Kinder and Stage 1 library lessons we will be reading Kim’s 2017 shortlisted Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year, ‘Chip’, a fun story about a seagull who loves to eat nothing more than a good chip and lets nothing stand in his way.

Stage 2 will be reading a few chapters of Kylie Howarth’s book called, ‘Fish Kid & the Lizard Ninja’, a story about a young boy, Bodhi, who visits the Galapagos Islands with his marine biologist parents. Classes will be learning where theses islands are and interesting facts about some of the animals unique to this special place. So far, learning that the Galapagos Tortoise has the longest life expectancy of any animal with a backbone and that the sea cucumber has no brain (among other things) has kept them highly entertained.

Stage 3 are continuing to learn how to use search filters to find specific resources in Oliver, the library’s database program. Logging on has sped up this week which is a big improvement, next week I’ve promised lollipops to everyone who can log on without my help. Hopefully, I will owe a lot of lollipops!

NSW Premier's Reading Challenge

This week sees the commencement of the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) for 2020 and notes to participate will be going home today. The PRC aims to encourage a love of reading for enjoyment in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student - to read, to read more and to read more widely. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge booklists open doors to a rich collection of children’s literature representing a range of books including fiction, non-fiction, picture books, poetry and drama, and include a wide variety of Australian authors. One goal of our school’s Annual Improvement Plan is to develop and extend literacy skills and by participating in the PRC, this is just one way we can support your children to do this

How Does it Work?

Firstly, children need to return a permission slip to participate, then a username and password will be provided to them to logon to the PRC website. K-2 children read 30 books (these can be read to them) and years 3 - 9 read 20 books from lists available on the website. As these lists are over 100 pages long, I am unable to print these for families, so you will need to access the PRC website. As books are read, they are entered into the online reading log. Once students have completed their set books, they will receive a certificate later in the year. The challenge closes at midnight on the 28th of August 2020. Please note that this is not a compulsory reading initiative but an optional enrichment program. If you would like more information, please visit the PRC website.

2020 CBCA NOtables Book List

Last week, the 2020 Children’s Book Council of Australia Notable Books List was announced and acknowledge the best Australian books released in 2019. The good news is, we have most of these books in our library already and we will be reading some of these books in the coming months. To view the full list, visit here.

Term Scholastic Book Club

Yesterday the first Scholastic Book Club catalogue went home with your child for 2020. This year we are continuing to encourage all families to use the online ordering system called LOOP.  Following the success of this system last year with most families using it already, this will mean families no longer have to return their order with cash to the school, you can now place your orders here.

Initially, you will need to register then you can place your order.  If you cannot access the internet, please send me an email at library@holytrinity.nsw.edu.au or phone the school and we can make other arrangements.  Please note, you don’t need to buy from the Book Club, it is an optional program. The library receives a credit for each item sold, which is then used to purchase more books for our collection which your children get to enjoy. Thank you for your support of the Book Club and if you have any queries, please let me know. Instructions to register & order are below.

How do I Order?

Simply grab your child's Book Club catalogue and either sign in or register your account at https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx.

Click on ORDER and then select your school and your child's class. Please note that for Years 7-10, choose ‘Secondary - All Years’.

Add your child's first name & last initial (so the school knows who the book is for) PLEASE NOTE: Your child's details will never be shared with 3rd parties OR used for marketing purposes - this is for distribution purposes only.

Enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue.

All orders are sent directly to the school for submission to Scholastic. Books will still be delivered to your child's classroom if you order by the close date.

Afterwards, there's no need to return paper order forms or payment receipt details back to your school!
