VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN

MR JEREMY WOOD - CURRICULUM LEADER ARTS

“Give me one for the money. Two for the show. Three to get ready now go cat go”.

It has been a long time coming but Unit 1 Visual Communication students were finally provided an opportunity to go on an excursion. On Wednesday 23rd March students were fortunate enough to be able to visit the exhibition Elvis: Direct from Graceland at Bendigo Art Gallery and hear directly from Peter King, the Exhibition Designer who worked with the Gallery to design the layout of the exhibition.

With more than ten years of professional experience working in interior and exhibition design, Peter has undertaken a number of exhibition and design projects with varied clients including the National Gallery of Victoria, Museums Victoria, Bendigo Art Gallery, David Jones and Zoos Victoria. In addition to producing the exhibition design for Elvis: Direct from Graceland, Peter also designed the Mary Quant: Fashion Revolutionary exhibition, held at Bendigo Art Gallery in 2021.

This program was particularly suited for VCE Units 1/3 in Visual Communication Design, and it was fair to say, they got a lot more than they bargained for. Not only did they learn about Elvis, but the preparation and planning that goes into such an event was particularly well articulated by Peter King. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions about how Peter’s career pathway was forged, his education and past experiences, and what methods and digital media he uses. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this exhibition before it ends on July 17.
