L & T AND LITERACY - Vira Pirrotta

Some of the Year 5 and 6 wrote some amazing pieces for our writing competition. Below are their pieces. I think we have some budding authors in our senior area. Good Luck to all the students who entered the competition.

The Shadow

I can sense you creeping up on me

Sometimes I allow you to engulf me

Other times I wish you would just leave me alone

You make me do some crazy things

You can also make me do nothing at all

I carry you everywhere, you are so heavy

You block all the colour in my day and can paralyse me into stillness

I pray for you to leave or to at least be kind

But you only grow darker and visit me more often

Because that is you……

You are DEPRESSION

The Science Experiment

One day at Sunrise Valley High School, Gabriel was in his Science class. As the teacher droned on and on Gabriel started an experiment. As he mixed the liquid into the boiling water, an explosion happened. The fire alarms went off and everyone screamed. Mr Crabby, the teacher, told everyone to evacuate the classroom. As Gabriel turned to leave something came out of the smoke. It limped over to the edge of the desk. Gabriel leaned down to see what it was. The smoke cleared, revealing a baby dragon. Gabriel gave a small yelp of horror, grabbed the dragon and left. As he entered the corridors, Gabriel went to put the dragon in his pocket, hoping to keep the dragon a secret. But as the bell rang for the end of the day, he got distracted by his friend. He dropped the baby dragon on the floor. ‘Hey, want to come to my house now?’ his friend Tom asked. But Gabriel was not listening. He was watching the dragon scurry across the slippery floor. Gabriel started to run after it, pushing people out of the way to reach it. He leapt through the air and landed close enough to scoop the dragon into his hands. The dragon gave a little roar as Gabriel slid the dragon into his backpack. Gabriel turned to leave but found Tom staring at the place where the dragon had been a second before. ‘Where the heck did you get that?’ Tom asked. ‘Get what?’ Gabriel said, already knowing the answer. ‘That dragon?’ Tom stated impatiently. ‘Well put it this way Tom, I made it in Science class.’ ‘You made that in Science class? I do not believe you.’ Tom said as if the whole thing was a joke. ‘No I made it in class’ Gabriel responded angrily. He never thought that his friend wouldn’t believe him. Judging by the look on Tom’s face, Gabriel said, ‘I made it accidentally.’ ‘Well if you put it that way, then sure.’ Tom said dramatically. With that finally settled, they turned to walk out of school. At home, Gabriel went to his room and took out his dragon. ‘I think I’ll name you Barry, Barry the dragon.’ Barry let out a small chirp with fire following after. Gabriel looked down to see his shirt on fire. Gabriel quickly put down Barry and grabbed a glass of water that was sitting on his desk. He splashed his top with water, putting out the fire. ‘Was that necessary Barry?’ Barry looked at Gabriel like he deserved it. ‘Now don’t give me that look.’ Gabriel said in a baby voice. Gabriel didn’t notice that on Barry’s hips were small wings. Barry took flight and flew around the bed, across the desk and landed in Gabriel’s open palm. Gabriel thought of an idea. He grabbed a matchbox and made Barry a home. He placed it on his bedside table. Gabriel knew at that moment a friendship had started.

Only Time Can Tell

Screams, silence, death. It is all too much for Aniah. Ever since the invasion of her village, she has been forced to run somewhere else. She is now at an inn 28 kilometres from her hometown. She was bruised up badly and slowly made her way down the corridor to her room where she practically collapsed into a deep sleep on her bed.

“Aniah? ANIAH! RUN PLEASE I BEG YOU!” Aniah reached out her hand to the darkness “D-DAD!” to her dismay she got no response. They’re all dead, mum, dad, Stella, Marco. Gone. Her friends? Gone. Home? Gone. Everything Aniah had, knew and loved was all gone. Tu’ la was invading quickly and in large numbers, nobody could escape them.

She fled her hometown, not once daring to look back. Her only goal being survival. It is now late in the evening and she has not stopped running her hair trailing out behind her. She ran about 5 km before hearing the patter of horse feet which led to her abrupt stop. One of the men on the horses drew their bow and shot an arrow, but right before it could hit Aniah another man threw his sword deflecting the arrow.

And her vision went black.

Aniah awoke with beads of sweat pouring down her face. “Another flashback” she muttered. She had gotten out of bed and was making her way to the door when she smelt something. Smoke. “No not again” she whispered. The inn she was at was rapidly burning to ashes. “I need to get to the alliance” she whispered. Determined, she grabbed her belongings and ran. Another place destroyed. Now all she could do was run as far as her feet could take her, away from the screams and raging fires behind her.

Who knows, maybe Aniah will survive this war? Only time can tell.

Murder on the Spaceprince

‘All aboard the SpacePrince!’

50 years in the making, the first space cruise was ready to set sail on its maiden voyage. The billion-dollar project was the size of 50 empire state buildings on its side, It could fit over 2 million people.

The engines started as the space cruise lifted off into the starry sky.

‘Altitude 242 km, speed MAC 100’ Said B52J.

B52J is the operating system for the SpacePrince; she had been on almost all the cruise ships alongside captain Jack since the start of his career.

‘B52J please prepare the intercom’ ordered the captain.

‘Hello, passengers! This is your captain speaking and it is my pleasure and honour to take you on the trip of a lifetime. ‘

That night the Spaceprince’s lights dimmed to suit real-world time. Although it was 11:40 most passengers were enjoying the many bars and restaurants aboard. At one of those many restaurants the captain was talking to a famous detective; Mr. Green. After a good chat, Mr. Green went back to his room and the captain went to the bridge. All of a sudden the lights went out. ‘Main power down, initiating emergency battery. Would you like to run an investigation sir?’ B52J asked.

No response, ‘Sir?’ Still nothing, ‘SIR?’ Captain Jack’s body laid in a pool of blood with a pipe sticking out of his stiff body.

‘PASSENGERS ABOARD THE SPACEPRINCE, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. PLEASE REMAIN CALM AND HEAD BACK TO YOUR CABINS.’ Announced First Officer Hudson.

‘How did this happen?’ questioned Officer White. They immediately sent for Mr Green.

He was impaled by someone nearby’ Said Mr Green.

It has to be two people working together as the lights went out and the Captain died.’ said Chief Officer Wilson.

‘The only four people that were nearby were, the First Officer, the Chief Officer, the Fifth Officer, and the Wheel Master.’

One by one the four suspects were questioned by Mr. Green.

‘I was in the radio and navigation room’ said the Chief officer.

‘I was in the experiment room’ explained the Fifth officer

‘I was at the wheel’ said the Wheelmaster.

Mr. Green continued to question the men, each of them blaming the First officer as he was the closest.

‘I believe it is Chief Officer Wilson, he seems too confident.’ Said the First officer.

 ‘Click!’ The lights flicker.

‘BANG’ a gunshot. Lying face-first on the floor was First officer Hudson.

‘WILSON HAS A GUN’ Screams the Helmsman.

‘ARREST HIM’ called Mr Green. Still confused about the crime, who was his accomplice.

How did he manage it?’ asked the Fifth Officer.

‘All we know is that it was him, so let's head back to the earth and put him in jail.’ said the Wheelmaster. Mr Green accompanied him to the brig.

Out of the darkness came a robotic voice, ‘It was me, his closest friend.’ The crew stood shocked, asking themselves Why?

BUONGIORNO!

Salve! (Hello). Bentornati al secondo trimestre Welcome back to Term 2! 😊

Firstly, I would like to say Grazie, to all that contributed to last term’s Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross). Unfortunately, I was not able to attend that day but I heard from other teachers that you were able to recite the Ave Maria preghiera very well…Bravi!

Secondly, I'd also like to say Grazie, to the children that attended the Italian Festa in Lygon Street, towards the end of last term. Again, I was not able to attend but I did receive some photos from parents and have included them below...

Wow!! What a way to start the term…not only has it been a short week but it has been a very busy one! Abbiamo festeggiato il giorno di San Fedele e l'apertura ufficiale della rinnovata scuola media. (We celebrated St Fidelis Day as well as the Official opening of the renovated Junior school). I’m happy to say that I did attend the morning ceremony and was able to take some photos, which I have also included in this article.

I was so proud of everyone being able to count in italiano when the Education Minister, Mr James Merlino, asked everyone to count to 3 and then he cut the ribbon to declare the Junior school officially opened. Bravissimi!! See you never know when you need to use your italian!

This coming Sunday, (domenica 8 maggio), as most of you may know, is going to be Mother's Day, (La Festa della Mamma). I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the mamme, nonne, e zie and special females in everyone’s family in the St Fidelis community…Buona Festa della Mamma! I hope your child/ren do something extra special with you, or for you, on that day! 💕

Next week: I will include an update on what the Foundation grades will be doing during this term. Stay tuned. Until then buona settimana.

Signora Rosa 🌹
