Drama

YEAR 9

Year 9 Drama students have spent Term 2 consolidating their skills in improvisation and further developing their understanding of the fundamental Elements of Drama. Their focus this term has been on production and design elements, culminating in producing promotional material, a set design or costume designs for the play "The Formal".

Students have gained experiential understanding of the play and its characters through workshopping and rehearsing the script in designated roles. We will continue rehearsing the play and constructing production elements with the intention of staging an abridged version of the show.

Year 9 Drama also had the opportunity recently to talk to the Bell Shakespeare actors after their performance of "Words, Words Words". The actors were able to give some great advice on acting and playbuilding as this will be their focus in Term 3.

YEAR 10

Physical Theatre has been the focus for Year 10 Drama this term. Students had the opportunity to devise their own group performances based on the stimulus of their choosing, and incorporating a number of dramatic conventions and choreographic techniques. The abstract nature of the unit was initially a challenge; however, the students were able to produce some engaging physical theatre performances.

YEAR 11

Design and the role of the director was our major study for Term 2. As a class, students gained an experiential understanding of the process of taking a script from page to stage. The youth theatre play Girls Like That was the focus of our study. Tackling the issues of bullying, friendship and the changing role of feminism, the process of workshopping and rehearsal allowed for engaging class discussion and self-reflection. For assessment, students were required to determine their own directorial vision for the production and create a design portfolio with a focus on either costume or set design.

YEAR 12

Students commenced devising their HSC Group Performance this term. Their piece explores gender stereotypes and the need for feminists. Over the course of the term, students have researched extensively, utilising media and even the Bible as sources of inspiration, the group are heavily influenced by Verbatim Theatre and their HSC text ‘The Laramie Project’. As well as working on the GP, students are also working on their Individual Projects, all of which are performance monologues. Characters in the IP range from a serial killer to Lady Macbeth. The HSC Performance Evening will be held in Term Three, a chance for the MDCC Community to view student GP and IP in a showcase.  Further information will be communicated in the lead up to the event.
