STEAM Tiny House Design

This term in Year 8 STEAM we have explored the world of tiny houses, focusing on sustainability. During the Tiny House Challenge, students took on different roles as either Project Manager, Architect or Marketing Manager with the aim of presenting their company and design to an audience.  They were set a task to create a tiny house design, using specific dimensions which integrated sustainable options such as water storage, solar energy and storage solutions with in the space.

As students progressed through the challenge they had a number of small projects to create for their presentation. The Architect had to create a scale drawing, build a scale model and using Google Sketchup make a 3D virtual walkthrough. The Project Manager was charged with organising the teams progress throughout the planning and construction phase and then ensuring everything that was needed for their presentation was accounted for. The role of Marketing Manager saw students designing their own business cards, a website, video and other information to help with their presentation and pitch.

During Week 8, Year 8 presented the results of their hard work, students set up their Tiny House company display, mapped out a life size floor plan and delivered a pitch to all who attended. We had a range of visitors including representatives  from CEDWW and Year 12 Software and Design who assessed the students on a number of criteria to judge the most successful design and pitch. We also had a large number of students and teachers from Mater Dei Primary School and Year 9 Food Technology who provided feedback and judged the People's Choice Awards.
