Music

YEAR 7

During the term, Year 7 completed their Music Inquiry Task 2, this was based on researching a popular band or artist and analysing the treatment of structure, texture and pitch in one of the songs from the artist. It was rewarding to see many students engage in varied forms of technology to present their research to the class. Students also completed various whole class and individual performances on keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele and vocals. Congratulations to all Semester One Year 7 students on their skills gained and improved confidence demonstrated throughout the course.

YEAR 8

Year 8 have just finished their own “Rock” performances. All students formed ensembles and performed their own version of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”. Students have been supported in their learning with a new online music resource called Musicedu which has enabled students to view listening clips, scores and backing tracks to performance repertoire individually. Well done Year 8 on some fantastic performances!

YEAR 9

Year 9 Music completed a unit on Australian Music with a focus on Composition and the use of chord progressions used in Australian Pop/Rock repertoire. Some focus repertoire included Never Tear Us Apart by INXS and Scar by Missy Higgins. Students then worked to complete a student-centred inquiry task that involved creating an arrangement of the 4-chord progression in small groups in a Rock/Pop style which was performed for the class. Students were exposed to the technology based software program, Sibelius, to create a melody in a Rock/Pop style based on the 4-chord progression. It has been rewarding to see the growth of students in their confidence to perform in front of an audience throughout the term.

YEAR 9 SCHOOL OF ROCK

School of Rock has been enjoying playing Rock Music every lesson. Students have all performed on either drum kit, bass guitar, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano/keyboard or vocals. It has been great to see Harrison Smythe, Liam Irvine and Hudson Ball develop confidence to perform on lead vocals and complete the rock bands with lead singers. All students are to be commended on their responsible, self-motivated approach to learning repertoire in their own time to maximise class time with their ensembles.

Students performed a taster of four songs they have been learning at a lunch-time concert this week as a prelude to the School of Rock performance in Term 4.

YEAR 10

Year 10 Music has been busy recently creating a remix of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Students were able to use the google program, Soundtrap, to record their own parts in conjunction with prerecorded parts to create a new version of this song.

YEAR 11

Year 11 have completed their first performance assessment. The class is to be congratulated on some outstanding and confident performances. They have also completed their first Viva-Voce which is a discussion based on the concepts of music using musical examples and demonstrations.

YEAR 12

Year 12 students are in final preparations for the practical HSC Music Exam which will be held during Term 3 in Week 9. Students have been workshopping their performances and have used constructive feedback to make improvements to their pieces. Students performing ensemble pieces have been fortunate to rehearse with our private teachers Mr Sean Reardon, Mr James Baker and Mr Steve Dogao each Friday and have shown growth in confidence, technical skills and personal expression throughout the term. We look forward to students showcasing their performances for family and friends at the HSC Music Performance Evening which will be held on Wednesday 4 September at 6pm.
