Congratulations – Theatresports Senior Team

Congratulations are extended to Oliver Clarke, James Bellamy, Jake Milligan, Joseph O’Brien, Matthew Gainsford, Ms Armanno, Mr Donohoe, and Ms Duff. Their combined efforts resulted in St Patrick’s College being awarded First Place in the Theatresports Challenge run by Impro Australia which is open to schools across NSW. Our boys competed against a range of co-educational and single sex schools from both the Independent and Public School sectors. This Competition is run along the lines of a knockout system, so teams need to perform consistently at a high level.

Theatresports is a form of improvised theatre that runs as a competition. Players/teams take part in 4 rounds, a 1-minute, 2-minute, open round and 3-minute round. Each of those rounds has ‘games’ that teams can choose from and play. They are given a prompt they have never heard before and have to make up the scene on the spot within the rules of the chosen game.

Theatresports teaches students confidence, interpersonal skills, performance skills, on the spot critical thinking and teamwork. They get these benefits as well as the challenge and accomplishment of competing against other teams which pushes them to excel.

This is the first time an SPC team has made it to the Grand Final and the first time we have been crowned the NSW Senior Champions!!

It would be remiss of me not to mention how well our Senior Team presented themselves at the event. This was noticed and appreciated by a great many.

Homework Club – Semester Break

Parents, carers and boys are advised that Homework Club in the McGlade Library will continue through to Friday of this week. It will re-open on Tuesday 19 July and I take this opportunity to thank the staff supervising this facility and encourage other boys to consider making good use of this service.

Well Done Debaters!

Last Thursday was the final round of the main season of the CSDA (Catholic Schools Debating Association) Debating competition. We had an incredible 12/12 wins on the night against Freeman Catholic College. Well done to everyone and huge thanks to all who supported our boys and coaches.

We now move into the elimination and finals rounds. With 10 out of 12 SPC teams moving ahead, every year group has one or more teams moving into one of the next rounds. This is the best result we have had in many years and is a tribute to the dedication and commitment of the boys and their coaches and the support of our parents and carers.

Details for teams and their next debates are as follows:

  • 12 As, with a 4-win record, debate against Catherine McCauley this afternoon and if successful, will move on to Friday’s Elimination Round 2 vs Loreto Normanhurst

  • 12 Bs, with a 5-win record, go directly to Elimination Round 2 this Friday 17 June. They will face either Rosebank College or St Mary’s Cathedral Catholic College

  • 11 As, with a 5-win record, will go straight through to quarter finals on 22 July

  • 11 Bs, with a record of 4 wins, debate this afternoon vs Domremy Catholic College via Zoom

  • 10 As, with a record of 4 wins, debate this Friday 17 June vs Marist College, Eastwood – location pending

  • 10 Bs, with a 5-win record, move to Elimination Round 3 on Wednesday 22 July – location and time pending

  • 9 As, with 4 wins, debate via Teams this afternoon vs Clancy Catholic College

  • 9 Bs, with 4 wins, debate via Teams this afternoon vs St Pius X College

  • 8 Bs, with 5 wins, will move directly to quarter finals to be held at Christian Brothers High School, Lewisham, on the evening of 22 July

  • 7 As, with 4 wins, will debate via Teams with Bethlehem College this afternoon.

The variation between the schedule of elimination debates across different year groups is due to the numbers of teams in each year group who have won 4 or 5 out of the 5 debates. It is an incredibly complicated process to work through to the final eight in each year group.

Unfortunately, we say goodbye and thank you for the season to our 7 B and 8 A teams and hope these students will join us next season. I will provide an update next week and hope that many in our community will come out to support our finalists next term.
