Learning, growing and celebrating together...
It’s all about perspective…
Sometimes a smile from a child is all that it takes. Perspective might be a difficult word to spell, but it’s a simple concept when it hits you right between the eyes every day.
‘What are they saying? What’s this thing called vegemite? Why is it so cold in the mornings when I walk to school, it’s May? Despite moving to the other side of the world, leaving the safety of home, saying goodbye to family members and school friends, without fail, she still smiles and waves each day out on the playground. Perspective.
He misses her so very much. All he wants to do is tell her about his day, to hear about her stories and adventures. Entering the school gates is a blur for him, until he hears the sound of children playing and the chorus of familiar voices calling his name. Another day has begun as a smile slowly begins to spread across his face. Perspective.
The smallest packages are often the most lively. She dances, she jives, she’s a hive of activity everywhere she moves around the school. Positively beaming every time she walks in the school grounds, clutching her father’s hand each morning, skipping to the beat of her own drum. She eagerly awaits each new and exciting learning opportunity. Perspective.
He hasn’t even started school yet, but he knows what it’s all about. His big sister constantly talks about school, her friends, the canteen, all the things she is learning inside and outside the classroom. He watches her jump out of the car at Kiss and Drop and longs for the day where he too can wear the red and blue uniform and wave goodbye to Mum, beginning his primary school journey. He already owns the playground and 'pretty much' has the keys to the office. He is forever smiling, he was born this way. His time will come very soon. Perspective.
She is wise beyond her years, the end of Primary School is rapidly approaching, but despite what she says to everyone, she doesn’t want her time at Sacred Heart Kew to end. Whenever she thinks of school she can't help but smile. So many fun times, so many memories, this school has been her life, always there when other parts of her life aren’t going smoothly. Perspective.
The language barrier is large, so many new words, some she doesn’t understand or hear at home. With every new word mastered, her smile widens as the ‘penny drops’ and that light bulb fizzles to yellow. She does not walk, she quickly darts around the school ground, presenting her new toys and trinkets to those she feels comfortable with. Sometimes you don’t need to have all the right words to fully engage in the world. Smiles speak every language that there is. Perspective.
Most of his friends have gone off to other schools, he still sees them sometimes on the weekend. His best friend is his dog, always there for a pat, always willing to chase a ball, just always there to depend on. He’s developing new friendships now, widening his network, looking forward to the day when he too, will wear that tie and carry that big black backpack. Smiles don't come easy to him, but he's working on this. Perspective.
Whenever it feels as though you may be losing grip on reality and that your day may not be going as you had hoped or planned, just think of the smiles, think of the stories and things don’t seem that bad.
Perspective is simple, it’s there every day, right in front of us, all we have to do is look.
Have a lovely weekend.
