With the cooler change in the weather this term, it was the perfect time to light up our pizza oven and take a culinary trip to Italy! We celebrated our bountiful basil harvest from term 1, which was made into a nut-free, oil-free pesto then rolled into sausages and stored in the freezer. We had Pizza Margherita and a salad of the imagination on the menu. The students remained open to continuous learning as we talked about the origins of the Pizza Margherita.

Legend has it that the very first Pizza Margherita was created in Naples in the 1800’s during a visit from King Umberto and Queen Margherita. The pizza was created in honour of the queen, with its colours also representing the Italian flag, red from the sauce, white from the mozzarella cheese and green from the basil.

To compliment this simple but tasty favourite, the students created a salad of the Imagination. In this salad the students were free to choose the leaves, some fruit and a vegetable to add to the salad. To garnish we used some pomegranate and some edible flowers to make presentation a little more special.

Buon appetito!
