Visit From Coliban Water Educator

This term we have been fortunate to receive two visits from Coliban Water Educator, Alice Rowbottom from Bendigo. The first visit offered incursions for both  our Year 2 and Year 4 students and just this Tuesday, Alice met with our Year 6 Green Team Leaders.

Year 2 discussed why we need to save water and then continued on to discuss how our water system works now, compared to the past. Our students were amazed to learn homes had ‘outhouses’, which required the service of ‘the dunny man’ who collected each household’s waste at night. They also learnt what is required to clean our river water. This tied in well with Year Two’s Inquiring Unit ‘Then and Now’.

Year Four learned about saving water and the importance of putting the right things into the toilet. Things such as tissues, actually last for years and years without breaking down and they did an experiment to see this. Students discussed our water supply now vs water supply 50 years into the future and why this decreases and not increases. Every time we shower, each minute is an extra bucket of water.

On Tuesday Alice worked with our Year 6 Green Team. She talked them through the importance of finding leaks within the school to save water. Our leaders conducted a leak test using food dye in the cistern of some of our school toilets. They were also left with tasks to complete, including reading our water meter at the beginning and end of each day and completing a Water Audit within our school grounds. By completing these tasks it will contribute to the Water Module and our 4th ResouceSmart Star.

All leaders were gifted with watering cans, shower timers and food dye to conduct their own leak tests at home. We look forward to Alice returning later next month to work with more of our students.
