School Captains: Life During COVID-19

School Captains Share Their Reflections on Remote Learning
Reflection by Charlotte W:
"Online learning has been a big adjustment for everyone, and for myself it’s still a day-to-day struggle. Some days I love waking up a bit late, throwing on a big fluffy jumper and having a nice tea whilst doing my schoolwork. I have to say, not dealing with the cold Melbourne weather has been a big plus! Other days, all I want to do is see my friends and be at school with a familiar routine. I even miss going to my locker, despite it being in the peaceful location of the library corridor. However, the efforts of our teachers have been tremendous during this time and I genuinely appreciate how available they all are. I don’t think I’ve ever asked as many questions, so I certainly value the responsiveness and patience of my teachers."
Reflection by Dana H (9E):
"Whilst online learning has definitely been a major adjustment for students and teachers alike, the College has continued to provide us with an exceptional education. Personally, I have adapted to online learning successfully and although it has proven difficult numerous times, there have been multiple benefits. Remote learning has enhanced my self-discipline, organisation and responsibility, given me more flexibility and spare time and has even removed distractions. Despite all these advantages, I would still prefer to be at school learning face-to-face with my friends and in a physical classroom. However, the current education system isn’t as bad as I originally thought it would be and all the DSC staff have definitely played a major part in making remote learning run as smoothly as possible. My teachers have all remained incredibly patient, understanding and supportive throughout this unusual time and have made sure that we are all able to contact them as well as ensuring that content is delivered to us efficiently and effectively. I believe that remote learning has and will continue to be a unique but positive learning experience and there are many things I will take away from the current circumstances."

"I never thought that I would be spending Year 12 sitting at my desk each day at home. But who could predict any of this? Online learning is an experience like no other, something that I didn't anticipate or know how to do. Like everything it has its positives and negatives. Waking up 10 minutes before class and enjoying a hot coffee while in my warm room is a benefit. Not being able to be with my peers and teachers each day is very difficult and often frustrating. Honestly, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what I miss. In general, I miss being at school but more importantly I miss being able to complain about having to go to school. We have all had to adjust in this unpredictable time. I cannot give enough thanks and gratitude to all the teachers and staff at DSC for the amazing positivity and resilience they have shown us. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for everything."
Reflection by Kate C:
“Overall I am enjoying remote learning as I can do things at my own pace and communicate with friends from other schools during the breaks. I am still able to ask my teachers questions. I miss seeing my friends every day and being able to socialise at school. Because the school offers some things that I am unable to do at home properly, for example ceramics, the teachers are trying other things to see what works. The teachers are trying their hardest to make this time easier for everyone which is really good. The best is being made out of the situation we are faced with and that is all that matters.”
Reflection by Mark H:
"Remote learning is a new experience for all of us, and inherently has its pros and cons. I like been able to get up later and have a warm cup of tea with me in class. However, I do still prefer going to school as it provides a better learning environment where I am able to ask questions and receive feedback on my learning straight away. I also miss being in class with my mates where we can work together and have a laugh which makes classwork more enjoyable. My teachers are adapting to the new learning environment and are continuously improving their lessons. Mr Harvey took us back into the 1980s with a blackboard, whilst Mr Rule is using external cameras to show his working out in real time. In the end, it is a small inconvenience that we must live with for the greater good."
Reflection by Nick J (9E):
"I have found online learning relatively good. I really like how the teachers and staff have made it an easy transition into online learning and have helped us every step of the way. I find it helpful that the teachers encourage us to stay in a routine but also give us time to relax and have a break from our devices. The workload they are allocating is very similar to when we are at school and I am pleased that it is manageable but still challenging. While at home and not learning, I find it fun to just relax and watch some TV but also do exercise to stay healthy. I also make sure to keep in touch with my friends virtually and still have some fun. I do miss seeing my friends at school though and really cannot wait to get back to the norm with physical school."
Reflection by Jaimie W:
"Although there have been some difficulties, I am thoroughly enjoying my remote learning experience. I anticipated that it would be overwhelming, however, my teachers have continued to offer me support and assistance as they would in the classroom. Their patience and guidance has made the transition from school to online learning uncomplicated and pleasant. Despite the disadvantages of not being able to participate in hands-on classes and missing my friends, there have been several benefits to remote learning. The obstacles of online learning have enriched my independence, responsibility and organisation. This experience is an opportunity for me to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on my teachers and peers. Having to learn independently has also eliminated classroom distractions while challenging me to have more discipline. Ultimately, I am positively viewing this difficult time, as it is a chance for myself and all students to cultivate, improve and learn various vital skills."
Reflection by Sarah V:
"Remote learning has been a challenge which has definitely had its positives and negatives. The quick change has been difficult to get used to, but teachers have done everything to help us during these uncertain times such as ask us random questions for our roll call to keep us all engaged. I have personally missed the small interactions during school and miss being able to hang out with friends! Although online school has been very different to typical life, being able to learn from home has taught me to adapt with the help of family and friends."
