International Students

Homestay Families Enjoy
'Virtual Visits'
By International Student Program Education Support Officer, Mary Liao
Our first homestay visit for 2020 looked a bit different this year, as social distancing saw us move to an online 'virtual visit'.
Over the last week, I interacted with over 10 families. I was so pleased to see how well students are being cared for with nutritious home-cooked meals and assistance with their studies.
We thank all homestay families for their care and support, offering such nurturing environments during this difficult time.

“With the current situation, most if not all classwork and homework have moved online and into our homes. The homestay students have enjoyed the smooth remote learning transition that the school has implemented, but it was also critical that we set boundaries and concurrently promote wellbeing.
Regular bedtime and sleeping patterns have been adhered to which will allow ample time in the morning for a healthy breakfast and changing into school uniform for online classes.
I remind Mike and Jordan to keep their study area clean and remove all distracting items during the school day. I have also implemented catch-up study sessions after school to curb homework procrastination. By having a good routine, we help Mike and Jordan stay focused and be more efficient when studying at home.”

"Learning from home has its perks. With the restrictions in place, there is no need to spend time on commuting to and from school. With virtual classrooms, there is no need to move between classrooms. This allows for more time to keep things organised.”
Fun Ways to
Learn and Laugh Together

At DSC, we take great care in supporting the emotional and educational needs of our international students.
Our 'Additional After School Support Program' is a great way for students to unwind after a busy day of remote learning. It offers fun virtual activities that help students interact with each other, while also helping them to improve their English language skills and develop their imagination.
Recently, students were asked to send in a picture of an interesting or unusual object from their house, that might provide a clue as to who they are. Students had to guess who submitted each photo, and then discuss their photo with the group. Students also voted on the most interesting photo, and a prize will be given to the student with the most votes!

"The additional after school support program is a great opportunity for me to interact with other people besides my classmates and teachers. The picture I shared was of a traditional Burmese instrument called a “Saung”. It was used by my grandmother when she was younger.
The program makes me realise that DSC is trying their best to make sure that students get all the support they need from teachers."

"The additional after school support program is a great way for us to share stories, have fun and release stress. The picture I shared is of my homestay family's new trampoline. During our quarantine period, my homestay family asked us whether we liked trampolines. We said yes and a few days later, a very big trampoline in our yard!"
