Discover The Power of Art Therapy

Did you know that art therapy has multiple benefits for health and wellbeing?

You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy the benefits and in fact, most exercises focus on the therapeutic and meditative aspect of the creative process.

Art therapy uses creative materials to assist with the expression and exploration of thoughts and feelings. It is a way to diffuse stress and anxiety and helps to calm and regulate the nervous system. Once we are in a calmer state, we are better able to process our thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

The benefits of art therapy include:

  • Increased self esteem
  • Helps you verbalise difficult feelings
  • Improved communication skills
  • Offers a positive distraction
  • Promotes healing from difficult life events
  • Helps us tell our own unique story
  • Builds positive coping skills
  • Explores your inner creative voice

Art therapy is especially relevant in the current climate as we adapt to new ways of living. Creating art can be a form of meditation and it may help to reduce anxiety and redirect negative thoughts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to live and behave differently, which has been hugely challenging. Many of us are experiencing feelings of loss, sadness, anger and frustration in the backdrop of unprecedented existential fear. It is important to acknowledge these feelings as they can be a normal response.

Art therapy is a fantastic way to channel these emotions in a healthy manner, and you may potentially discover inner strengths and resources that you didn’t know you had!
