Literacy in the Foundation Classrooms

Over the past few weeks, the students have settled in to the structures and routines of school beautifully. In English, InitiaLit Foundation has started strongly and is being supported by the evidence being gathered through our one-one Early Years Interviews.

We have been developing the skills of recognising rhyming words, syllabification (clapping syllables in words), as well as orally segmenting and blending phonemes (44 sounds of the English language).

In the area of Spelling and Reading, we have been learning that letters make words, words make sentences, and sentences make paragraphs.  Students are developing their phonemic awareness through learning letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make.

In Writing, we are concentrating on developing the correct pencil grip and writing posture. With each new letter learnt, the students practise writing with the correct starting point and formation. This is an important foundation skill in building their writing stamina.

In Speaking and Listening, this term, we will be shortly commencing "Self-Interest Discussions" which is a structured form of the traditional "show-tell" approach. Students are currently being allocated "conversational anchors (topics)" on which to base their presentations. These sessions will commence at the beginning of March. This information will go home and include your child’s allocated day and what to bring.
