Health and Physical Education Faculty

The Health and Physical Education department is enthusiastic and eager to tackle 2020 head on. The department welcomes Mr Michael Miller who arrives to Mazenod after 15 years teaching experience at Parade College in Bundoora. Mr Miller is passionate about Health and Physical Education and is a valuable asset to the team (despite the fact he barracks for Carlton). Once again, students are provided with a wide array of learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. To support the development of your son in Health and Physical Education, numerous excursions will take place off site. We kindly ask that parents and guardians approve excursions online when prompted in the coming weeks. These activities enable students to further strengthen key knowledge and skills from the curriculum. Furthermore, they provide lifelong skills such as the swimming program in Year 7 and help to establish the importance of enjoying a healthy and active lifestyle.

Premier’s Active April recognises the importance of maintaining a sufficiently active lifestyle and encourages all Victorians to do 30 minutes of physical activity each day during April. It is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to getting more people active and healthy. They encourage individuals to start small and to keep in mind that every little bit counts! I encourage everyone in the family to download the Active April free mobile app. Once downloaded, enjoy the many discounts and benefits such as 10 free passes at your local YMCA facility or a free tennis session at participating Tennis Victoria courts. With Term 1 holidays fast approaching, there are a range of activities which provide ample opportunities for students to get active.

Another great opportunity for students to get active is the swimming program at Year 7. Students participate in a six week swimming program to improve water safety, develop swimming ability and increase their confidence around water. 7 Simonds are currently halfway through their program, with remaining Year 7 classes to undertake lessons in Terms 2 and 3.

Finally, it would be remise of me not to acknowledge the highest achieving students who studied VCE Physical Education Units 3 & 4 in 2019. Oliver Van Rensburg and Krispin Martin both achieved study scores of 41. Congratulations to Oliver and Krispin on these results and many thanks to all members of the department for continuing to drive high standards in Health and Physical Education.
