English

Reading and Viewing

Students will be exploring a variety of written and visual texts. The texts will allow students to explore Space and Natural Disasters. Through deeper understanding students will be able to link their learnings across the curriculum. Guided reading lessons will allow students to revise techniques for comprehension to further expand their knowledge of the text. 

 

Writing

Students will be continuing on with their learning of spelling patterns through the SMART Spelling program. This will be supported through the completion of weekly spelling homework activities. Students will be learning grammar conventions that will assist in their writing, such as complex sentences, the use of pronouns and adjectives.

 

Students will also be focussing on Colorful Semantics. Colorful Semantics is a teaching approach that aims to teach children to develop sentence structure. It aims to help children develop skills when it comes to sentence development, understanding questions, developing narrative, understanding written text and developing vocabulary.

 

Speaking and Listening

There is a focus this term to develop student public speaking abilities. This will be a focus across the term through mini projects, 'Genius Hour' and debates. Students will develop individualized goals and work toward them to improve their abilities in developing interesting speeches and speaking to an audience.  

Maths

Number and Algebra

This term we will undertake a unit using the four operations, using worded problems with single and multi-steps in real and imagined world settings. We will explore the use of brackets and the order of operations to write number sentences. We will make connections between fractions, decimals and percentages.

 

Measurement and Geometry

Our focus is on extending our understanding of three-dimensional objects and their nets, comparing areas using metric units and describing and comparing two-dimensional shapes.

 

Statistics and Probability

This area of mathematics provides an opportunity to describe and interpret different data sets in context and in digital media and elsewhere. Students will also be encouraged to transfer relevant factual content to use in their writing.

Inquiry and Religion

Religion

Mission

Students will explore the drought and famine in Ethiopia. Students will partake in Mission, encouraging them to not only think about what they can do to help, rather than why they will help. 

 

Advent

Students learn that Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the birth of the Son of God at Christmas. They explore the writings of the prophet Isaiah and the symbolism of the Jesse Tree to reveal signs of God’s presence in the lives of the Old Testament people and in their own lives today.

 

Inquiry 

Students will explore space and gain an understanding of planets, and the research that has been developed because of space exploration. Students will focus on a topic and research deeper into the concept in preparation for debates. Students will also gain understanding of how natural disasters occur and the impacts these have on communities and wildlife. 

Social & Emotional Wellbeing

This term we will be participating in the Posi School Program, an evidence based program that develops skills, strategies and knowledge to help students navigate tricky situations in life. Students will continue to work through the E-Smart program modules to consolidate their understanding. This will develop students' awareness and skills in navigating technology safely.
