Co-curricular - Junior Sport

It was great to see so many of the Junior School boys at ‘Back to Breen Day’. Their unwavering support and involvement from the sidelines no doubt helped spur on both Firsts sides to resounding victories. I hope that the boys in attendance and their families were able feel the pride and connection that the Senior boys have to the College and the purpose it enlivens in them. Allowing the space for great deeds to be done and excellence to be achieved.

I have had a few emails from families regarding Junior School Summer sport and its recommencement in Term 4. I think there might be a little confusion with the Senior School Summer sport trials. Boys in the Junior School do not have to retrial for Term 4. Term 4 is a continuation of Term 1 and all teams will remain as they were at the conclusion of the first half of the season. All boys involved, regardless of sport or skills program, are expected to fulfill their summer commitments in Term 4. Training schedules and draft draws will be made available as soon as practicable.

For many of the boys in the Junior School, this time of year affords them the opportunity to rest, relax and spend time with family on Saturday mornings. A time to prepare for the short, sharp end to the Summer season. For those selected in the Junior School Athletic Squad, they head straight into their season, with no rest period. Saturday 13 August was the first invitational carnival for the squad. The South Harbour Carnival affords the boys in Athletics to get some strong competition in preparation for the IPSHA Carnival later in the term. Competing against nine other schools in the area, such as The Scots College, Cranbrook School, Sydney Grammar School and Trinity Grammar School, the competition for places is fierce. To their credit, our boys were able to hold their own, with many placing in the top three for their running heats and field events. This Saturday, the boys will be at the track once more for the Newington Invitational Carnival. We wish them all the best for the day.

With the Winter season over, there is a large amount of College equipment to be returned. All boys that received a blue goal keeper’s jersey are to return it this week. Please bring them to Mr Locke’s office and have your name marked off. Boys in the AFL side need to keep their guernsey until the sport photo day. They will be collected after photos have been taken. I will inform the College community when these photos are due to be taken a little closer to the date.

Lastly, I was reminded of a great quote from Michael Jordan over the weekend. It is a great idea to remember in sport, but also for our learning and future work:

“I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing our athletes hitting the track again this weekend.
