TERM 3 ENGLISH:
In Reading this term, we will be continuing to follow the InitiaLit English Program. Students will be introduced to the letters v, w, x, y and z, and what the vowels are. Middle vowel sounds in words will continue to be focused upon as well as oral blending and segmenting of words with four sounds. They will also learn all about digraphs and that two letters together can represent one sound - ck, ll, ss, ff, sh, qu, ee and zz. Each week the students will also be involved in a variety of reading and writing activities through our literacy sessions, which will focus on the weekly letters, digraphs and tricky words from the program. The children will be learning new tricky words and will be eagerly adding them to our tricky word garden display. They will continue to focus on a variety of reading strategies such as making connections with texts, sequencing events, using their learnt skills to decode unknown words and making predictions.
The Foundation students have been exploring the differences between Picture Story Books (Narratives) and Information Texts (Nonfiction). They have been learning that a picture story book tells a story and we read them for pleasure. They have characters and a setting, and there is usually a problem that needs to be solved. Information Texts contain information about many different topics, tell us facts and help us to learn new things. They contain many different features such as a contents page, photos, headings, maps, diagrams and many more!
In Writing, students will continue to strengthen their knowledge and ability to correctly form their letters and numerals using the correct starting point and size. They will further develop their skills of Recount writing by continuing their weekly writing and by writing a recount about our exciting production. The students will develop their punctuation skills and begin to more accurately include full stops and capital letters in their writing.
PRODUCTION
This week we had our whole school production ‘The Wizard of OZ’! The students did such an amazing job performing on stage and we were so proud of their resilience, respect and responsibility on both nights. Our little chickens sure do love to dance!! In the lead up to the two big nights, there was LOTS of rehearsal!
COMO HOUSE ECURSION!
On Wednesday 31st September, we are going on our very first excursion. The children will be travelling by bus to and from Como House and Gardens. This is a very exciting excursion and is facilitated by trained and experienced guides. This excursion will provide the opportunity for students to compare the life of 19th Century children and families to their own experiences. The students are required to bring a small backpack/bag continuing their lunch, extra snacks and water bottle. The students will be eating outside and will participate in olden day games so they will need to make sure they bring along a jumper and/or jacket.
Thank you so much to all the parents who kindly offered their time to come and support us on our excursion. Because of the overwhelming expressions of interest, we did have to pick names out of a hat. Parents who offered support have been notified.
