An Overview of our Learning

In the midst of a busy week it was nice to also be able to take a step back and appreciate the amazing environment we live in and wildlife we can experience within our school. Eagle eyed students spotted this Tawny Frogmouth in the playground this week trying to keep warm on a chilly morning.

Foundation students joined in some exploration of the work of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This artist and architect created fantastical buildings and paintings with swirling lines and spirals. Students made their own lollipop trees using paper collage techniques to cut and layer their circles. They also contributed swirls and lines to the background to make a collaborative background to display our trees.

Students have also begun working on a paper weaving project. Inspired by the story 'The Cow Tripped Over the Moon' by Tony Wilson, students have drawn their night sky background and used a guide to draw the cows head. In the coming week we will develop weaving skills to finish our artwork.

Year 1 and 2 students took a short break from our sewing project to spend some time in the wonderful world of the wizard of oz. As we continue to explore the element of form, students constructed paper cubes, colouring the characters and twisting them around to make silly combinations.

Year 3 and 4 students have been busy making templates and cutting their pieces of felt ready for sewing in the coming weeks. They have had to think about colour schemes and how they will achieve the smaller details they designed. With each step of this project students are showing excellent resilience and support for each other as they navigate the design process.

With amazing production rehearsals over the last couple of weeks, art has been an opportunity to slow down and have some choice to draw and create. Many 5/6 students created tissue paper flowers for use by the munchkins on stage and others helped to paint a variety of items green for the emerald city. Their contributions to our production helped to tell the story and transport us into the wonderful world of the Wizard of Oz.

Last week we had an opportunity to relax. Some chose to make a fun bookmark while others took the idea and made it unique, creating an entirely new character.
