Teaching & Learning 5N

Students in 5N have been working super hard on their mental maths fact fluency, with a particular focus on multiplication and division facts.  This has involved students participating in daily number talks, a variety of hands-on games and activities, and routine timed practice to promote maths fact automaticity. 

A Number Talk is a 10-15 minute conversation around a purposely crafted mental maths problem and allows students to share their thinking when presenting their strategies and solutions.  Number talks are designed to lead to more accurate, efficient and flexible mental strategies.

All students have achieved their personal best results and, as a class, are excited to see that their practise is paying off with an impressive growth in the overall 5N class average.  Some of our favourite maths games include – times tables knockout, Pac-Man, multiplication war and multiplication squares.
