PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Korumburra Secondary College,

triangulating our data

As our community will be aware, we are currently undergoing a Review. This happens every four years, and is an opportunity for schools and their community to celebrate their achievements and plan their next steps for improvement.

Parents have an opportunity to provide feedback either in person (next date to do this is Thursday 11th August at 9am, meet at the General Office) or via email to the parent email address:

7960-parent-support@schools.vic.edu.au

Email feedback would need to be in by Tuesday, 16th August at the latest.

The Reviewer has already been very complimentary about our students, their manners, attitudes and appreciation of the school, and the dedication and hard work of our staff.

Last week, the Data Executive also met and began reviewer multiple data sets, with a particular focus on student improvement in the Like Ability classes for English and Maths. Below is a selection of data (from Year 9 as a sample; other year levels show the same trend) which shows that the Like Ability groupings (despite the disruption of COVID) are having an impact in raising students’ levels of performance in Mathematics and English.

Renaissance testing, Year 9 Maths

The gap between the lines show a period during a COVID lockdown. The percentile ranking is based on all students of a similar age who have undertaken the testing. We can see, on balance, growth in the percentile ranking of each class against other students of a similar age who have sat this test.

Renaissance testing, Year 9 English

In the data below you can see some inconsistencies due to not all students being tested. This can inflate or deflate average results. This is something the English Team will work on in the future. Student absence can make it challenging to collect consistent and timely data on student progress; wherever possible, students should avoid unnecessary absences.

PAT results

What you can see here is that our School Mean Score was -4.4 off the All Schools Mean Score in 2018, and +3.2 in 2022.

The gap in Reading has decreased from Term 4, 2018 in the School Mean Score compared with the All Schools Mean Score from -4 to -1.5 in 2022.

Just watch for the numbers here who have sat the test, but overall we can see a positive trend when compared with our School Mean Score and the All Schools Mean Score (with Reading just slightly behind in Term 2, 2022).

NAPLAN Benchmark Growth 2021

We have only had preliminary NAPLAN data for 2022 but are expecting more information shortly.

At School Council this week, we spoke about the positive start we have had to the Review but also about our concern that Vaping is becoming an issue amongst children (including primary school aged students) and young people. We were able to discuss a number of strategies which we will be implementing now and into the future. As previously mentioned in the school’s newsletter, parents and young people need to understand all the facts surrounding vaping. Please find included with this newsletter more information directly related to dispelling the myths surrounding this concerning resurgence in smoking/vaping.
