FOOLISH?

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd the story of the rich man who had a great deal of land which produced a lot of crops. It was so plentiful that he did not have a large enough barn to store it all – so he decided to tear down his barns (notice the plural) and build larger ones. This would give him room for both the grain and some of his numerous possessions. Stockpiling this wealth would ensure that he could “eat, drink and be merry” for many years.

So we might ask ourselves “why is Jesus calling this farmer a fool?” He is a wise and responsible person. He has a thriving business. He has ample savings set aside for the future and is all set to enjoy his golden years. Isn’t this all wise and responsible?

Jesus challenges the idea that our possessions will bring us the happiness and the “full life” God wishes for each of us. No matter how much we have, it won’t protect us from illness or accident or keep our relationships from hard times. What will give us happiness and contentment is how we invest our lives and the gifts that God has given into His mission of blessing and redeeming the world! After all, as the writer of Ecclesiastes realised - you can’t take it with you!

Because all that we are, and all we have belongs to God, our future is secure beyond all measure. So Jesus tells us, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).

SISTER KATE O'NEILL RNDM

The College was fortunate to host Sr Kate O’Neill RNDM on Monday afternoon. She has spent many years working with street children in the Philippines assisting with their education and helping them make their way out of poverty. The Young Vinnies and two Year 8 Religious Education classes enjoyed hearing her story. Shortly, Sr Kate is heading to New York where she will work with an agency that supports women who have been trafficked to begin life again. We thank her for visiting our College and for the incredible work she is doing with some of the world’s most needy people.
