SRC’s FightMND Big Freeze

During Term 2, to support the charity FightMND the Student Representative Council organised a Big Freeze on the last day of term. To support this fantastic cause teachers volunteered to be dunked by students in icy cold water on the last day of term, however, the number of  teachers and which teachers were getting dunked was determined by the amount of money MGSC could raise for FightMND. Ultimately, this encouraged the MGSC community to donate as we all wanted to see our favourite teachers get dunked!

This was one of the biggest events SRC has hosted since I joined the SRC in 2018. It was fantastic to see the huge student turnout creating such an exciting environment for students and staff. You could sense the college pride through the involvement of students from all year levels, whether that was dunking your favourite teacher or winning a prize in the raffle.

FightMND strives to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, the SRC wanted to raise awareness and allow students to gain an insight into what Motor Neurone Disease (MND) truly is. The name, MND, was given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, swallow and breathe fail to work normally and eventually die. We were shocked and heartbroken to find out the disease gradually takes away the patient’s use of their arms and legs, their ability to eat and swallow, their speech and ultimately their ability to breathe…all in an average timeframe of just 27 months.

In Personal Learning classes for years 7-9, students learned about MND, which not only educated the students but also the teachers on the severity of the disease. I am very proud to announce that MGSC through the sale of FightMND beanies, raffle tickets and donations raised a total amount of $4650!

A special thanks to the teachers that donated their time! Without Mr Sinclair, Ms Sleep, Ms Molina, Ms Archer, Ms Elloy, Ms Bell, Ms Leong, Ms Allison, Ms Ta, Mr Yong, Ms Lawler, Ms Duggan, Ms Gordon, Ms Kennedy, Ms Dimu, Ms Chris and Ms Matthews contribution this event would not have been such a great success!

This is a massive improvement compared to how much MGSC raised for the free dress day in Term 1, so I encourage you in Term 3 to all please bring a gold coin donation because a dollar from every student can go such a long way!
