From the President

Mr Zac Piesse (SVC 2008-11)

The OVA committee met on August 3 and continues to look at ways the Association can best engage its members, whilst also supporting the College in its noble aspirations for the future. One way of supporting future generations of SVC boys is to look at establishing a tax deductible scholarship programme. Many Old Virgilians have been beneficiaries of support from the Brothers and the College and so it is important that we have means whereby this support can be extended into the future. A sub-committee will look at the best way to do this in the current environment. We look forward to bringing you updates about their work in coming editions of OVAtions.

A number of significant events for the OVA are rapidly approaching and I strongly encourage you to round up your mates and get along.

  • The August Luncheon will be held at the Maypole Hotel in New Town on Tuesday August 30. It was great to have so many new faces at our June gathering – hopefully we can build on this and get twice the number this month. Cost $30  - two courses – broad menu – ample parking nearby. It is important that we know numbers in advance for catering purposes. Please RSVP to Graeme Rainbow grainbow@stvirgils.tas.edu.au or text 0467 514 667 by Friday August 26.
  • Friday October 14 - Annual Dinner at Blundstone Arena. The evening features 2021 awardees Dr Leighton Kearney and Dr Martin Scurrah. This year the committee has decided to make a posthumous award of a Heritage Roll of Honour inductee to a much loved and successful Old Virgilian. The name of recipient is withheld for the moment in order for the members of his family to be contacted, and it will be announced in the September edition of OVAtion.
  • Friday October 21 is the return of the Melbourne reunion function. Details to be confirmed but please mark it in your diary and start t round up your mates living in Victoria. Tasmanian members are encouraged to think about making a weekend of it - you never know who will be there!
  • Friday November 11 - OVA Annual Golf Day, Royal Hobart Golf Club. Places are filling quickly so please get your entries in as soon as possible.

Finally – there are many Old Virgilians out there who are unaware of this publication. Check will you OV friends / relatives to see if they are recipients.  To get on the email list it’s as simple as going onto the Association’s website – www.oldvirgilians.org.au- and giving the requested details.  Furthermore, all previous newsletters (now numbering 57) can be viewed on this site. (Go to ‘menu’ and then to ‘Newsletters’)

We hope to catch up with many of you at the Maypole on August 30 or later in the year.

Zac
