Year 3 Spotlight

Year 3 has had a great start to the school year!

Numeracy

We have been busy learning all about place value! So far, we have investigated:

  • How to be effective partners when playing place value games.
  • Reading and recording numbers as numerals, words and using MAB symbols.
  • Place value houses and how they help us read numbers.

As part of our exploration of time, we have been practising reading analogue and digital clocks and recognising indigenous seasons using a calendar.

We have also been working really hard on our problem-solving skills. Look at the photo below and ask your child if they remember how many triangles they counted. How many can you count?

Reading

In term one, we have been setting up the Reader’s Workshop. Students have looked at choosing ‘good fit’ books using the IPICK strategy. We have looked at what a reading session should sound like, look like, and feel like. We have established the different stages of the Reader’s Workshop and now understand how to move from one stage to another. We have worked through reading strategies, such as activating prior knowledge, and are beginning to learn about making connections.

Writing

Have you ever tried to be persuasive or to convince someone to share your beliefs? In term one, Year 3 students have been trying their hardest to do just that. Students will be spending the term:

  • Analysing and reading persuasive texts
  • Planning texts
  • Drafting texts
  • Revising and editing their texts
  • Publishing their texts

Students will be given the opportunity to choose their own passionate topics, varying from ‘Why everyone deserves an education’ to ‘Animals should not be kept in cages’.

Students have also enjoyed the freedom to write in other styles during seed writing sessions.

Health

Our inquiry unit this term is based around health. Students have participated in lessons that help them identify feelings and how they would best respond in certain situations, linking this with the Zones of Regulation. They are engaging in targeted RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) lessons based around emotional literacy and personal strengths.

Students will have the opportunity to visit other Year 3 classrooms where they will complete lessons that focus on community health and how this has a positive impact on our society. They will look at the effects of diet, hygiene, sleep, and physical activity on their bodies and the different health messages they would see in the media.
