News from Yr 4/5/6

Literacy and Maths

This week the students of Yr 4/5/6 have received the books they will be reading this term which are Red by Libby Gleeson, Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Twits both written by Roald Dahl. The students will read these books and do a range of activities each week based on the events that happen in their books. The main goal is to get the students used to reading consistently and completing the related activities. By doing this, we are building their skill level so they can start running their own Literature Circles where they talk in groups about their book in order to have a deeper understanding of the text.

In the first few weeks of school we have been learning about the place value of whole numbers from the ones to hundreds of thousands even dipping into the millions. We have been learning where these numbers go on a place value chart, playing games to practise putting the right number in the correct place value column and understanding the value of a number that is in a certain place. This will lead to learning about decimal place value in the coming weeks and how decimals and fractions are connected.

To become more fluent with our multiplication in Yr 4/5/6 we play a game called “Loopy” in which we practise our times tables against a clock as a class. When we first started playing this game we completed the task in 4 minutes and 31 seconds and with some practise we have managed to reduce our time to 2 minutes and 37 seconds. Hopefully by the end of this term, we will have reduced this time further. Our aim as a class is to get below 1 minute which is very challenging because we have to work as a team and listen to the sums being called.

Kind Regards
