Literacy, Numeracy and Inquiry

We started the week with Valentine's Day cards for someone we love bear-y much.

We progressed to the letter Tt and made trains. We cut out strips from black paper to make the train tracks before we added the train and carriage. We used stickers for the wheels.

For the letter Aa, we made fabulous apple trees. We traced around our hand and arm and used this as the branches before adding pom poms as the apples.  We think these looked very effective and encompassed a variety of fine motor skills.

We also had a taste test of different types of apples. We tried Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Royal Gala, Kanzi, Fuji and Jazz.  Pink Lady was the favourite.

We love our Art and Craft. For the Letter Bb we made bees. Come in and see them buzzing around our hive.

As bees make honey, we made ‘Honey Joys’. They were delicious! Here is the recipe, in case your child would like to make them for you.

Ingredients:

90g butter

⅓ cup sugar

1 tablespoon of honey

4 cups of Corn Flakes (we used Gluten Free)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 150°C.

2. Line 24 hole patty pan with paper cases.

3. Melt butter, sugar and honey together in a saucepan until frothy.

4. Add Kellogg's® Corn Flakes and mix well.

5. Working quickly, spoon into paper patty cases.

6. Bake in a slow oven 150°C for 10 minutes.

7. Let them cool.

When we learn a letter, the children are exposed to many different fonts. The Victorian Modern Cursive is the font we use as our ‘writing font’ which has an ‘open’ b. This is to avoid confusion with the d p and q letters which are all very similar.

Our last letter for the week was Cc for corn. We stuck real corn kernels onto a cob and popped some corn as well.

Last Tuesday was ‘Twos-day’.

To commemorate this unique date 22-2-22, we made special crowns and wrist bands and decorated them with adhesive sequins. I am sure you were very impressed.

We continued this theme by counting by twos. They could all count by 2’s by the end of the lesson. Using 5 different coloured pairs of M & M’s certainly helped us count. Try practising at home. We counted to 10 but perhaps you could help them extend this to 20 and beyond.

In Maths, we have been playing games, consolidating our recognition of numbers and practising the correct formation of the numbers. We played dominoes and a variety of matching games.

In Inquiry, we were introduced to a glossary of words which we will be using in our ‘Community’ unit.

CARE- I am caring for my dog.

CLASSROOM-I love learning in my classroom

COMMUNITY-  I live in a community of people who help each other.

FRIEND- I love playing with my friends.

HELP- I love helping my Mum.

KIND- I am being kind when I hold the door open.

LISTEN- I need to listen carefully.

PERSIST (KEEP TRYING)-When something is difficult, I need to persist.

SHARE- I need to share my toys.

TAKING TURNS- I need to take turns when playing in the school yard.

MANNERS-When I say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, I am using my manners.

We acted out some scenarios of these with Mr Cirillo.

We also drew our families and mounted them on a painted background.

Preps love to dance! This is a great opportunity for the children to enjoy a quick brain break and move their bodies. They really have the moves like Jagger!

We have also been practising our throwing and catching as well as our ball handling skills during our Thursday Netball Clinic.

Kind Regards
