Student Voice

Upschool

This year, the students of St. Bridget’s will be taking part in a program called Up Schools.

This program is designed to teach the children about a change making community. The idea is that we empower our students to find their voice, collaborate with each other in teams and create change in their world.

In our first lesson, students learned about what a change maker is and then chose a change maker that interested them. Their task was to research their chosen change maker and answer a range of questions then report back to the class.

Below are two pieces from Ruby and Kate who took part in the change making lesson and wanted to share their experiences with you.

Hi my name is Ruby. Something I liked about Up School is when I got to work in a group and we did a research activity about Martin Luther King. Something I have learned about change makers is that when you are a Change Maker, you change the world. For example, Malala who fought for education for girls. Something that I learned about Martin Luther King is that he did a lot for people of colour. He had a dream of everyone no matter what race or background living together in harmony.

Hi my name is Kate. Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about Change Makers. In our very first lesson, we were able to choose a Change Maker and research information about them. So far, we have learnt about what Change Makers are and what they do. Change Makers are people who change the world. My group chose to find out about Greta Thunberg. The other groups did Malala and Martin Luther King Jr. My group learnt that Greta Thunberg changed the world by making a sign that said school strike for climate. She also gave many speeches around the world promoting sustainability for a better world. I liked looking at the information about Greta and finding out things about her that I didn't know.
