Reading Journals
This year as part of our reading program, we have been working on our ability to discuss our reading by journaling our thinking and ideas using ‘thinking tracks’. A thinking track is where students note down how they have used the comprehension strategies as they read. They might questions the text, summarise the text, consider their prior knowledge and make predictions, visualise or think about the text structures and features present in their Just Right Text.
In completing ‘thinking tracks’ students are developing their ability to understand their reading in more in-depth ways because they are drawing on their metacognition and thinking about their thinking. This is really important for learning and something that can be transferred to all subjects and will carry them from year 7 all the way to senior school and beyond.
We have included some examples of student thinking tracks from years 7-9 plus an example of a year 11 reading journal entry for you to see the work our student have done.
We are really enjoying seeing the progress our students are making with this work.
