Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning is a select entry class that supports students to engage by developing their confidence and commitment to school.  In this program students develop social communication skills, collaborative group work and leadership.  Students this semester have worked together to landscape around the school and have created a personal garden together.

Brodee Sinclair (left) and the Outdoor Education class completed a ‘Masterchef’ assessment, cooking on lightweight cooking stoves called Trangias.

Students were required to get creative with their menus and practice safe cooking practices for when in Outdoor environments.

Victorian Training Awards

Congratulations to Callum Howden for being one of three finalists in the Victorian School Based Apprentice of the Year award. Callum, a Year 11 VCAL student, has been working at SW Refrigeration one day a week as well as completing a VET in Electrotechnology. Callum has done a magnificent job of maintaining motivation and effort in his VCAL studies while doing what he loves most, working at SW refrigeration. In fact he has done so well that Cal has been offered, and taken up, a full time apprenticeship with this employer for 2021. Well done Cal!

Assessment and Reporting Update (Caitey Wilton)

This year our staff have been busy adjusting to a new assessment and reporting method, and a new software platform for this. Common Assessment Tasks have been set throughout the semester, with the student results and comments published to students and parents on Compass. This is so that parents and students can receive more regular feedback on classroom learning growth. In addition, we have implemented the Student Effort Assessment (SEA) Report, which recognises the attempts each student has made in their attitude towards learning.

Over the course of the year, as we have moved back and forth between face to face and remote teaching, our reporting methods have had to adapt in response. I have been impressed with the resilience of staff, as they have taken these changes in their stride. At present, they are working on the end of semester reports, which will give parents some understanding of the assessment tasks that students have been working on in the second half of the year, and the level of achievement they have attained. These will be published to parents on the 11th December 2020.

Our final SEAs report for years 7-10 was also published recently on Compass. We encourage any student, who would like further support around improving their results in 2021, to speak with their teachers for suggestions and support.
