Primary Music

Dorothy Lincoln

In Term 4 Primary Music has an instrumental focus, which  includes having fun playing old  favourites with the Boomwhackers, tubes cut to a precise length to produce a musical note when hit. Each child plays one note in a melody and together the class plays the entire song. This requires learning to play together in time,  concentration, listening to others and following a score.

Year 2 students played an old favourite: ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ and  then one of the most important songs in the world ‘Happy Birthday’!

Year 3 were quick to learn a dance to the music of ‘A Lion Sleeps Tonight’. Next week they will have the opportunity to make up their own steps. They then using the Boomwhackers played along to the song. They learned about flats and sharps as Bb was needed to play the song.

Prep expanded their composition skills to 8 beats, making up their own rhythms using colours to indicate notes e.g. red sticks mean ‘C’. They then clapped and played their composition.

Year 1

At the end of Term 3, Year 1 had a class concert but the lesson ended before we could finish. This week the students who missed out were able to perform.

Year 4 students learned the body percussion to ‘Four White Horses’. This week they took on the challenge of playing a 4-part round of ‘Frere Jacques’.  This required concentration and keeping the beat consistently. They will be exploring some popular tunes in the next few weeks such as ‘I’m a Believer’ and ‘Rolling in the Deep’.

Year 6 students are continuing working on learning how to play four chords on ukuleles and keyboards as many pop songs can be played using only 4 chords.
