Around the Primary Classrooms

Year 3

The students in Year 3 have commenced a unit of work on what causes night and day. They have discovered that although the Moon and the Sun appear to be a similar size when viewed from Earth, they are in fact very different in size. They used a simple experiment of using spherical objects to explore why the Moon and Sun appear to be the same size when viewed from Earth.

Aussie Bird Count

Last week, Year 4 students became citizen scientists and participated in the Aussie Bird Count conducted by Birdlife Australia.

They ventured down to Lambert Park in the company of Dr Simon James, Mrs Caroline Wilson-Haffenden and Mrs Sharon Himson.  Their first experience was to wander the length of the park and get a sense of the different habitats within the Park and the birds which were most likely to be found in each one.  With the expertise of Dr James they were able to listen to a bird call and then search for and identify the species of bird.

In total they observed and counted 15 different species of birds in the park.  They strictly adhered to the constraints of the survey and worked cooperatively and enthusiastically.  Back at school they collated and graphed their data and it was submitted along with other keen bird enthusiasts across the country. It is hoped this data will help monitor and protect birds and their habitats across Australia.

Year 6 Navy

As part of their homework last week all students in 6 Navy were asked to take the theme of Book Week ‘Curious Creatures Wild Minds' three dimensional.  All students were asked to try and be as weird and as wacky as possible with their creation and I think you would agree by scrolling through the above photo gallery, the students most certainly achieved that.  Well done 6 Navy.
