Learning in an IB World School

As I mentioned last term, preparations are well under way for our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) Evaluation Visit in June next year. IB schools are evaluated every five years to ensure that the delivery of their programmes not only complies with the high standards of the IB, but are on a journey of continuous improvement that results in better student learning outcomes.

The MYP provides a rich teaching and learning environment that allows students to engage in meaningful learning. Students make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the world around them. The MYP helps develop critical, creative and reflective thinkers.

In a study conducted by Flinders University in South Australia, researchers explored the notion that social and emotional health plays a key role in determining students’ social and academic outcomes, not only at school, but also in later life. The study showed that the MYP has a positive impact on students’ social-emotional wellbeing.

Like all IB schools, Oakleigh Grammar has a strong international focus. We value the importance of our students having intercultural understanding, and developing international mindedness. In this global age, these are qualities that are essential for all people around the world to embrace and be better equipped to understand each other.

New Policy

I wish to advise that, due to legislative requirements, a new Oakleigh Grammar Whistleblower Policy has been approved by the Board. Members of our community may view this policy on our website.

End of Year

Over the past week or so it has been wonderful to share in a number of end of year activities that have been full of good spirit, and that have recognised some outstanding student achievements. These included the Year 5 Graduation, and the Middle School - Senior School Awards Evening. Of course, I am looking forward to next week’s Prep - Year 2 Concert and Junior School Awards Evening, which I am sure will be equally good.

Full credit to our Years 3 - 5 students for the way they participated in the first House Swimming Sports recently. It was great to see their enthusiasm and commitment, as well as the way they acknowledged their peers for their efforts. I also appreciated the opportunity to share with the Year 6s a day out at Dandenong Market, where they had the chance to put together a hamper of goods for Our Daily Bread, an outreach mission supporting disadvantaged families in the community.

Towards 2020

As we turn our attention to 2020, I highlight for families the following key dates:

Thursday, 30 January -  Year 12 Commence

Friday, 31 January - Years 1 - 11 Commence

Tuesday, 4 February - Prep Commence

I wish everyone the full joys of Christmas, and I hope you all find time to share in some memorable moments with family and friends over the next few weeks.
