From The Careers Team

In November – The Year 9’s participated in Opportunity Knocks sessions.  Students chose one session that they were interested in.

These were successful events that would not be possible without the support of:

Mulgrave Private Hospital

CSR Monier Tiles

Dandenong Magistrates Court

BIO-Eyes @ Monash University

Mulgrave Private Hospital gave Carwatha students the opportunity to explore a hospital environment and experience the daily operations of a medical facility.  Students heard from a variety of experienced staff.  Students were able to ask questions about their professions-nursing, being a doctor, emergency staff, events management, administration, meals and cleaning staff

Taj enjoyed seeing the variety of work roles in a hospital

April realised you have to be very passionate to work as a nurse

Rose commended - that there are education classes for doctors to learn new techniques

CSR Monier Tiles - students heard about the innovative new products Monier had to offer homebuilders and industry builders.  Students explored the manufacturing process via a factory tour

Caroline-all steps to making tiles are important when making tiles for roofs of houses

Febin-enjoyed the wrapping of tiles together so they can be despatched in a timely manner to a building location

At the Dandenong Magistrates Court students were greeted by the Court Registrar and a Magistrate.  Both staff members of the court were friendly, knowledgeable and hopeful for the best outcome for clients coming and going out of the court system.  Students and staff were able to sit in sessions

Josh noticed how respectful you have to be before the Magistrate-a simple nod of the head when entering and leaving the court room

Ifi-saw that court rooms are small and that most cases are open to the public

Paul thought that the Magistrate has to be a much focussed person as they see many people and listen to many cases per day.

Jamie learnt that translators are available for people who come from overseas and that English is their second language

Bio-Eyes students had the opportunity to use their laboratory skills in a laboratory environment.  They observed the various life cycles of a zebrafish.  Students were also taken on a fishy tour-sharks and axolotls were a big hit

Ethan learned that zebrafish can regenerate

Abdullah-enjoyed seeing sharks, looking at eggs of zebrafish under the microscope

Amber-thought Laura was an amazing presenter

Connor learned that axolotl’s have many different colours and patterns
