Assistant Principal's Report

Student / Parent / Guardian / Teacher Conferences

Wednesday 28 March

Student / Parent / Guardian / Teacher Conferences are of great importance for all students and their families as it assists in the establishment of routines and practices that will impact on student performance in the end of year assessments. Regardless of the Year Level that a student is in, there is strong evidence that clearly shows where a family of a student is actively involved in their education, the student will enjoy greater success in their learning outcomes.

Despite what they might say publicly, all students need to feel the confidence that they are supported both at school and at home. Where there is a strong partnership between the student, their family and their teachers, a student will be encouraged knowing that those around them are all “on the same page” when it comes to their learning.

All parents want their child to reach their potential, they want them to succeed and enjoy a fulfilling future and therefore they recognise the importance of the students attending and doing well at school.

Student / Parent / Guardian / Teacher Conferences are an important part of this process as they permit discussion and feedback on what has been achieved and just as importantly how and where further improvement can be made between now and the final assessments. Teachers have the role of being the coach and developing a plan for students to achieve. These Conferences are when families can attend and better understand that plan and how it can best be achieved.

Please Note: Students DO NOT ATTEND school on this day for regular classes. Instead they are required to attend the conferences with a parent / guardian in FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM.

Aston Shield

On Monday 19 February we were lucky enough to have Alan Tudge MP attend our assembly to present the Aston Shield. Alan was unable to attend our Orion Night in 2017 due to parliamentary commitments.

The Aston shield is awarded to a student in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the service of others in the community.

In 2017 the recipient of the Aston Shield is Bryce Prissmann. Bryce is a wonderful community contributor. He encapsulates the Scoresby Secondary College school values of Integrity, Nurture, Success, Pride, Innovation, Respect and Excellence. He is a young man who has demonstrated great pride in the school and a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

Bryce is a dedicated member of the Country Fire Authority (Scoresby). He started with the CFA 7 years ago as a Junior Brigade member and he continues to give back to his basketball community by being a referee and developing the skills of young basketballers.

Added to this Bryce was awarded the Knox City Council’s 2018 Young Citizen of the Year at the recent Australia Day ceremony – mainly for the actions stated above.

High Achievers Assembly

On Monday 19 February we were lucky enough to be able to have some of our High Achievers from the class of 2017 come and speak to our community. This was a great occasion where we celebrated the achievements of those aspiring for great results. We welcomed back Luke Dodson, Frazer Spence, Ivory Eerden and Tash Orfanidis. Unfortunately Christy Pritchard was unable to attend due to educational commitments.

To start with we celebrated the fact that 100% of our student applying for tertiary places were offered a first round offer as well as all of our VCAL students gaining an apprenticeship, traineeship or full time employment. These are great results and we are very proud.

For our special guests we heard that:

Luke Dodson – was awarded Dux for 2017. He had an attendance rate of 100% in 2017 and made the most of his ability in to achieve his best. He received an excellent ATAR and with that received a first round offer in Science at The University of Melbourne.

Frazer Spence – was one of our College Captains in 2017. He was an active member of our community and he got involved in many aspects of the College – SRC, Student Voice, Teach the Teacher, Productions etc. With everything that he was involved in it didn’t distract him and he remained focused on his academic pursuits. Frazer was offered a place in Architectural Design/Architecture Monash University.

Ivory Eerden – has always been focused on her academic endeavours where she was regularly recognised for her efforts and achievements. Ivory was offered a place in Science at Monash University; however she has elected to defer that place for now. She continues to follow her dreams and will be working in her passion area of equine industry. She is deciding which trainers she would like to work with.

Natasha Ordanidis – Tash was also a College Captain is 2017 and she was also involved with our student leaders. She led many assemblies and student activities. Tash has been offered a place in Paramedicine at Monash University.

Christy Pritchard – although Christy was unable to attend on the morning I would like to acknowledge her. During her time at Scoresby Secondary College she displayed great dedication to her studies as well as making the most of the opportunities offered to her at this school. She was actively involved in student voice and was a member of the SRC and in 2017 she was a College Vice-Captain. Christy was offered a place in the Arts at Monash University, however has elected to defer that position and take up a place in Fashion design at Kangan Institute.

We wish each of our High Achievers a lot with all of the members of the class of 2017 all the best for their future endeavours. I’m sure what you have learnt during your time at Scoresby Secondary College will hold you in good stead.

Everyday Matters – The Importance of Attendance

We all want our students to receive a great education. The start of a great education starts with students attending school on time every day.

Students who attend school regularly develop good habits that are necessary for success during school and beyond school; whether in the workplace or in further education.

Missing school can have a massive impact on an individual – academically, socially and mentally. It can affect a student’s ability to achieve success in assessment tasks as well as impact negatively on relationships with other students and can lead to social isolation etc.

Students learn new things at school everyday and everyday they are away they miss important information and can fall behind their peers. For some students the thought of catching up on work and learning can become too difficult.

In 2017, there were 10 students who attended every school day. Students who can display great commitment towards their studies will be able to use this to demonstrate commitment for future endeavors.

Compass

All parents/guardians of students have access to the Compass Parent Portal (https://scoresbysc-vic.compass.education/)

Compass is an excellent and efficient way for parents to keep up to date with their son/daughter’s progress at school. Through the Parent Portal, you can:

• view up-to-date class and school attendance information;

• approve past or future absences (medical certificates will need to be provided to approve VCE/VCAL absences);

• book your Parent/Student/Teacher conferences; and

• access information regarding upcoming events and news.

Parents are reminded they should not share their Parent Portal password with the
