LANGUAGES

Bienvenue!   Selamat Datang!

Welcome! 2018 promises to be another exciting year for students of languages at Lilydale High School. We are fortunate to be part of the Languages Assistant Program again in 2018, and welcome Mélodie to our Languages team to assist the French students.

LHS students and their families are ready to host 24 students from our French sister school, Lycée Darchicourt, who will arrive on the 18th February to spend two and a half weeks participating in a language enrichment and cultural exchange.

At the end of March thirteen Lilydale High students will set off for a three week visit to Lycee Darchicourt in Hénin-Beaumont, France, accompanied by two LHS teachers.

Mr Wallin will again be running an after school class on Mondays, Club Camembert, for students interested in extending their French skills. Please contact Mr Wallin for further details.

In addition, there will be Wednesday lunchtime sessions in Room 30 for French and Indonesian students, beginning the 14th February, run by Madame Pradier and Ibu Stoyanoff.

The Bilingual Club is for students who need extra help with their classwork or homework, want revision in certain skill areas or it is just a time to catch up on overdue work.

Greetings from Mélodie:

My name is Mélodie Malartre and I will be the French assistant at Lilydale High two days a week this year. You will see me around on Thursdays and Fridays. I was born in Paris and I have lived there almost all my life. I studied in Paris, in Grenoble and in Japan. I graduated with a Masters degree in literature and I am studying French as a foreign language. Last year, I was teaching at the French Institute of Fukuoka in Japan. Now, I'm very happy to have such an experience in an Australian high school. I am very pleased to meet you all!

Education Perfect

Parents and guardians of Languages students are reminded to purchase the 2018 subscription for Education Perfect of $23.50.

This is a yearly fee that is paid to Education Perfect to enable our students to access the online language learning tool, Language Perfect.

This payment may be made at Lilydale Books.

Classes should be able to begin using Language Perfect during Week 3, following the upload of classes to Education Perfect.

Year 7 students are asked to check that they download the Education Perfect app, not the Language Perfect app as is mentioned in the list of school required apps.

The Language Perfect app has been superseded by the Education Perfect app. This app has more functionality than the LP version and not all of the activities on Education Perfect are supported by the previous app.

Year 10 French Celebrates La Chandeleur

On Friday 2 February, Madame Farrell’s Year 10 French class made crêpes. They are similar to pancakes, but much thinner.

The 2nd of February, known as La Chandeleur in France, is an important date in French culture as it marks the end of the Christmas period.

Traditionally, crêpes are made on this day to celebrate this time of the year, as it means that winter is coming to an end in France. Crêpes are made with milk, sugar, eggs and flour and cooked in a pan over a stove.

It is a tradition in France to flip the crêpes into the air while holding money in one hand to bring good luck for the coming year.   A few people dropped their crêpes on the floor. It was a sad time.

We added toppings such as powdered sugar and Nutella to make them taste even more delicious.

Celebrations such as these are fun because we get to eat lots of yummy food!   Miam miam! - Kaitlin and Nick (Year 10 French).

Un très grand merci à Peter and Karen in Food Technology whose assistance and advice was invaluable.

World Education Program (WEP) Australia is a not-for-profit student exchange organisation. We send high school students to 26 countries for short term, semester and year-long programs. While on exchange, students attend school full-time and live with a volunteer host family.

For almost a century, student exchange programs have produced innovators, leaders and influencers across all sectors. Exchange students develop sophisticated ways of looking at the world, respect for other cultures, sensitivity to different cultural, political and economic systems and mindfulness towards the welfare of the planet and its people.
