Reconciliation SA 2015 School’s Congress
On Thursday the 15 of October, a group of year 7 students had the opportunity to attend an anti-racism forum to address what racism is and what we can do to stop it happening. We met at the Port Club with students from other schools where we watched a video about racism and ways it can hurt people. We also heard from Ellie Lovegrove who had an experience with racism at her school and how she dealt with it. We then listened to the song she wrote about it.
We participated in role-plays which showed negative forms of racism and then we were able to turn the negative into positive actions. It helped us learn how people can be treated and ways to make change. Then we had lunch and played football on the oval with some students from the other schools who were from many diverse cultural backgrounds.
After lunch we joined our school group and made a poster of “What we know”, “How we feel”, and “What we can do”. Some of the actions that we can take to prevent racism occurring in the community are: to report any racism you experience or see, use your voice to stand up for yourself and others, don’t ignore racism, support victims of racism, stay confident, learn about what racism is, how it can affect the victim and make sure you behave in a respectful and inclusive way reflecting our Largs Bay School values.
