Cross Country
The countless hours and many kilometres of running up and down Mentone beach finally resulted in the ultimate prize for the ACC Cross-Country Team in 2016, becoming Division 1 ACC Champions for the first time since 2001. We had come very close over the past few years but always struggled to put together the ‘complete performance’ as a team.
Training began at the start of Term 3 in the dark and cold of Melbourne’s winter. However there was something different about this cross-country season, the students were super motivated turning up to training twice a week in big numbers. On some occasions over 50 students attended training and put in the hard work along the beach paths. Such big numbers made for an interesting time at breakfast feeding all the runners. We were going through 8 boxes of Nutragrain, 10 loaves of bread, 6 litres of milk and 8 litres of orange juice a week.
After two trial carnivals, the final team was selected based on both training and performance and this was not an easy task as so many students had been performing strongly.
We arrived at Bundoora Park and erected the new St Bede’s College tent 100m from the finish line. This was a great move as the whole team was there for each race cheering the students running as they powered to the finish.
After each Year Level raced we checked scores and could not seem to catch St Josephs Geelong and it looked like they would take the honours for the day. This was until our U17 team had an amazing race cutting their lead in half and setting up the opportunity for our Seniors to do what they had not been able to do since year seven. As leaders of the team they really stepped up, running a great race to put us into first place and take out the overall title.
Special mention has to go to Riley Roberts winner of the U14 race and Matt Crowley (Captain of cross-country) who won the senior race. Capping off a very successful day for the College we also won the U15 and U17 titles.
A big thank you has to go to all the students who trained all term and the coaches that were out there with them every morning: Mr Brown, Mr Fordham, Mr Lalor, Mr Last,
Mr Radford and Mr Murphy.

Year Level Golf Championship
This year’s Year Level Championship was held at Rossdale Golf Club in excellent conditions for golf. Thirty six students participated in the event and all enjoyed the challenge, independent of their scores. Jack Freeman and Zachary Rattray tied for the low score of the day, both shooting 79. It was gratifying to see a number of the winners were new students to St Bede’s College Golf Program.
The winners of each Year Level are shown below:
Year 7 Joshua Peacock and Lucas Jackson
Year 8 Matthew Dunne
Year 9 Thomas McKinley
Year 10 Zachary Rattray
Year 11 Robert Lonsing
Year 12 Jack Freeman
I would encourage all the junior students to participate in the golf activities at the College to ensure St Bede’s College remains a golfing power in the years to come.

Year 8 ACC Basketball
This year’s Year 8 ACC Basketball squad consisted of a very talented group of students. Both teams, A and B, had a very successful season, winning all but three games between them. The losing margins were no greater than 3 points. The A team finished 2nd on the ladder after the minor rounds. The B team finished 3rd for the season.
The A team played against Mazenod in the Grand Final. This was the only team that they lost to in the minor rounds. The Grand Final was an epic encounter with both teams trading quality baskets all game. Some exceptional 3 point shooting (James Doyle) and solid defence (Fintan Glackin) kept the game alive until the final seconds. We were trailing by 1 point with seconds remaining until Callum Guillot drove through the top of the key to score the winning basket.
Top scorers in the Grand Final were: J. Doyle 15, M. McInnes 10 and C. Guillot 5.
Best players were: J. Doyle, F. Glackin, M. McInnes and C. Guillot.
The premiership team were: Harvey Burke, James Doyle, Walter Delahunty, Fintan Glackin, Callum Guillot, Max McInness, Joshua Meysztowicz, Charlie Miller and Tibah O'Brien.
Year 7 Basketball
Premiers
Kaylan Kitto, Blake Howes, Cooper Goonewardene, Campbell Blogg, Tom Koppens, Sevie Stefanakis, Marcus Windhager, Nate Dear, Peter Pecer.
The Year 7 basketball team had a fantastic season, winning every game by a convincing margin. Whitefriars were competitive in the Grand Final but St Bede’s College managed to pull away in the second half.
Every player brought something special to the court and the team played well together. We had fun, were good sports and worked hard to improve our game during the season. A special mention should go to Finn Callaghan who generously gave up his place in the A team to help out the B team for the final, as they were short of players.
Final score - St Bede's College - 55 Defeated - Whitefriars College - 41
