Sally Cheah-Johnson

Assistant Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate our students and staff for their work and achievements for this term.  We had a very busy term and as a school community, we have achieved and reached milestones through the dedication and commitment of students and teachers alike.

The term was packed with many activities and programs that have drawn our school community together as a strong team. We had sports carnivals where the House spirit was amplified and celebrated.

Term 1 has concluded very well and I am delighted to see that most students have had a great Term 1.  I hope students will take the opportunity of the 2 weeks holidays as an important time to rest, recharge and reinvigorate to be in readiness for Term 2.

After the holiday break students will commence Term 2 on Tuesday 23rd April.  Students will see the number of assessments (tests and assignments) gain in momentum in Term 2.  Therefore it is very important that students set a solid study plan to prepare for Term 2.  Early planning is important in achieving successful.

I would suggest that time management is often the most crucial factor in the preparation.  To help you plan your time efficiently, I would suggest that you organize three kinds of timetables:

  • a term calendar / planner to map out key events or tasks for the term
  • a weekly timetable so you can structure your time in the short term that allows recreational breaks with study.
  • a planner with daily 'things to do' lists to keep you on track.

School Attendance:

I would like to remind parents and students that JMSS have a school attendance requirement of a minimum 90% attendance rate.

The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in their academic performance when they attend school consistently. Regular school attendance allows students to build their skills and have continuity in their learning journey.

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways parents can prepare their child for success—both in school and in life. Studies have shown that students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to achieve at school, and setting them up for a strong future.  Studies have also shown that when students are absent for an average of just two days of school per month—even when the absences are excused or with some reasons– it can have a negative impact on the continuity of their learning.

However if absenteeism is due to illnesses, understandably it will be hard to avoid. On that note, I would like to urge our students to take good care of their health to avoid illnesses such as the winter colds and flu.  It’s vitally important to balance studies with plenty of rest, good sleep and a sound diet.

Approval of absences Parent Compass Portal: Parents can now approve the absent day(s) of their child on the Compass Portal.  We hope this will assist parents to indicate to the school that the non-attendance of their child from school is with their knowledge and is approved by them.
