This week we were thrilled to present the colours awards at the school’s assembly. Each student who has received an award at this assembly should be proud of their achievements. The awarding of colours highlights exceptional achievement and contribution to the cocurricular program over the course of the year. It was impressive to see 140 students cross the stage today to receive awards.
During the second week of the school holidays, 3-8 July, Kinross Wolaroi is competing in the Snow Australia Interschools Competition at Perisher Valley. KWS Knicks
The Knicks have played two matches in the last three weeks all against Kinross teams : the Lakers and the Celtics. Whilst losing both matches, the Knicks put up a strong fight against both teams. The defence worked hard with Laila Rusten tackling the opposition and doing well to clear the ball to the wings. Mack Sweetapple again used his speed and agility to get the ball up the wings when possible and Jimmy Hutchings as goalkeeper made some very good saves. The Knicks team is making excellent progress in their stick skills and working as a team.
KWS Celtics
Round 4 the KWS Celtics played the KWS Knicks, which they won 2 – 0. Round 5 the KWS Celtics played KWS Raptors, winning 8 – 4.
The team are continuing to build in their skill and confidence. Charlie Swift and Poppy Blair are proving formidable combination in the centre field with the pair of them being our highest goal scorers of the KWS Raptors. Close passes and driving to the post also enabled Ruby Leigo to score her first goal of the season. Zoe Lane as goalie continues to grow in confidence ably supported by Spencer Williams, Katie Lawler and Zoe Harmer in defence. Eva Bonnington, and Ebony Inman are proving valuable contributors to the game with strong defensive and offensive skills. Charlotte Ferguson and Lilly Ferguson continue to improve each game and their dribbling and tackling skills contributed a lot to the game on Monday night.
The KWS Celtics are looking forward to their next game against the Molong Badgers.
KWS 76 ers’
On the 26th of May, the KWS 76’ers went head-to-head with the Molong white tigers. Molong proved to be a tough opponent as the 76’ers went down 9-4. Despite having players away due to sickness and injury, the team’s communication skills and cohesiveness made for an enjoyable game to watch. Although we did not come away with a win, this game allowed the 76’ers to improve their skills as well as playing format. Our strikers, Skye, Pheobe and Minnie worked well together to score our 4 goals. I look forward to seeing the team take on the feedback from this game and putting into action when we come up against the Molong killer whales next week.
KWS Heat
The mighty Under 14's Heat had a second hard fought draw last week at hockey. We came up against Canobolas/Ex Services. Pixie was strong in goals and the rest of the team worked hard on their passing and communication. Ebony Inman graciously played for us, giving the team one sub.
KWS Raptors
The Raptors have continued to build skills over the past few games, lots of good passes, excellent defence and last night a few goals to celebrate the teams hard work! The beauty of this team is that there are no individual stars; everyone works hard and contributes to the team, making us a surprise package for each opposing team because there are no chinks in our armour.
Our forwards who are working hard at passing across the attacking circle are Luca, Pip, Essie, Nancy and Lachie. The mids have been tirelessly defending and building in attack and include Lily, Jemima, Hannah, Maisy, Alloway, Ella and Zoe. And as always, our consistently brilliant fullbacks are working hard to support their goalie. Lucy M, Lucy P and Mellie are our last line of defence and make more tackles than our rugby teams!!
Our second half games are spectacular, and this brilliance is starting to sneak into the first half as well so watch out for next round!
This year has seen four teams entered in the ISA netball competition. This competition is allowing the students to compete against other independent schools from metropolitan Sydney. KWS has entered a Junior A team (Year 7 & 8), Inter A team (Year 9 & 10) and 2 Open’s teams (Year’s 10, 11 & 12).
The girls have represented the school in an outstanding manner and have had great success on the court.
Currently Junior A is undefeated with 5 wins which is an outstanding effort in Kinross’s first year of ISA netball. Score lines in most games have seen the girls winning games convincingly with 25 goals or more the difference.
Inter A have had 2 wins and 3 losses and are currently placed third on the ladder.
KWS 2nds have also had 2 wins and 3 losses which has them currently placed 4th on the ladder.
KWS 1st are competing in ISA 1st division and are competing against the best players in the ISA competition. The girls have continued to build each week and score lines for each game have been extremely close. Unfortunately, the girls are yet to get a win, however I am certain with their current form this will occur over the next few games.
If you wish to see the girls in action, they will be playing this weekend in the KWS gym against Oakhill and Barker. Below are the times for each fixture.
FIXTURE | LOCATION | COURT | TIME |
KWS 1sts V Oakhill 1 | Kinross Wolaroi Gym | 1 | 11:00am |
KWS 2nds V Oakhill 4 | Kinross Wolaroi Gym | 3 | 11:00am |
KWS Inter V Barker 8 | Kinross Wolaroi Gym | 1 | 12:30pm |
KWS Junior V Barker 17 | Kinross Wolaroi Gym | 3 | 12:30pm |
SS Snails - 20 May
Taylor Swift Song of the Match: Fearless (Taylor’s Version)
With a stormy game against CYMS in the rain, hail, and snow the game ended in a 29-4 win, and a truly fearless attitude from the KWS Snails against the elements. The game had a calm and sunny start, in a friendly match between OHS and KWS students. However, as the storm clouds set in, and the rain fell the game went on. With all players slipping around the court, and numb fingers catching the ball it was a bit of a mess, but the game pushed on. Both teams turned to icicles as the rain got heavier, however the defence stayed strong with Greta Bourne and Sylvia DeGraff dominating the centre court with help from Issy Edmonstone. A surprise guest from Amelia Hall, in another KWS team, helped Scarlett Mackenzie in a dynamic duo in the shooting circle. Parents and students rugged up on the sidelines, cheered for our win, with cookies to celebrate.

Snails v OHS - 27 May
On a freezing yet hopeful Saturday the KWS Snails set off onto the courts ready to try our best and play like legends, against Orange High. It was a game full of surprises, laughs, and good sportsmanship all round. The quarters were like a rollercoaster of emotions and high spirits from both teams. But one thing was constant THE GOALS with both Scarlett Mackenzie and Grace Adams putting their skills to the test scoring a whopping 39 goals against Orange High. With the help of amazing passes and intercepts from the whole team, the girls were working together to bring each other to victory. Ending the game with a final goal of 39-24 and the Snails going home with a win. Overall, it was an amazing game, full of amazing people.

Rowing will start a PE Unit for all Year 8 students in Term 3, 2023. The ‘Rowing PE Unit’ involves taking all Year 8 students to the Rowing Shed on Spring Creek Dam and doing some selection / TID testing on the entire cohort.
We do this unit in PE to introduce students to a sport many wouldn’t know about or have experienced. This unit will conclude in Week 4 of Term 3 after putting the students through a rowing session in the swimming pool and a few sessions on the rowing machine.
If you are interested in potentially rowing for your summer sport, please see below;
Sign on for summer sports will take place in Week 2 of Term 3, where students are able to sign up for any summer sport, including rowing. If students want to row, then I recommend signing up as soon as possible so all correspondence makes it to the right place in a timely manner. Unfortunately, we will not be able to take all that have signed on due a variety of limitations. This applies to all year groups (current Year 8-11).
We will be testing the students through their PE lessons over the next few weeks. However, we will offer further opportunities to trial and allow students the chance to better their score(s). Selection is based on objective data gathered via the trials. We will be testing students over 200m and 1000m on the erg and recording their height.
For students interested in Year 9 and above, we will do some selection trials in Week 3/4 of Term 3. Further information about rowing is available on our HUB page. Please see link below;
The KWS equestrian students have been out travelling again, this time to Canberra for the Snowy Mountains Grammar Equestrian event. It was great that SMGS moved the event from Jindabyne to Canberra this year, numbers were huge and 8 riders represented KWS over the 4 days - Charlotte & Audrey Pearce, Jess & Millie Taylor, Lily McBeath, Hannah Goodsir, Claire Nelson and Amy Caldwell. Outstanding results from:
A major highlight was the team winning the best presented school trophy during the teams parade.
This week a team of 28 students will head to Coonabarabran for the North West Equestrian Expo.
Kinross Wolaroi is one of the bigger schools there in regard to team numbers competing and we are looking forward to another successful event.
Orange Triathlon Club held their 2022-2023 season awards on Sunday 28 May. Multiple awards were given to Kinross Wolaroi acknowledging the contribution and achievements of our athletes and program.
These were:
Sophie Martin – Female Club Champion
Zoe Wood – Junior Female Encouragement Award

Since our last report we have enjoyed a rare back to back set of home fixtures against Trinity Grammar School and St Aloysius' College. We were also lucky to pick up some extra games against Scots All Saints and Orange City. Across these games we have had some tremendous wins and this should give our boys an enormous amount of confidence and belief.
Our trials are now done and the excitement of the ISA Competition starts to build. The next two weeks give us the ability to rest the bumps and bruises, freshen up, but also get some quality preparation done. We have the unique opportunity of a two week preparation going into our first competition game against Oakhill College on Saturday 17 June. We then move into the representative break and school holidays. Absolute focus should be on our first game and our expectation is that our boys will empty the tank. Bring on the ISA.
