CWA Public Speaking
Mrs Justina Holland (MIC Debating and Public speaking)
Kinross Wolaroi students have been successful competitors in the CWA Public Speaking competition that was held on the 29 & 30 May.
Year 9 student Amy Pearce won the CWA Year 9 and 10 Division, against a talented field of 18 speakers from schools across the Bathurst, Cowra and Orange region. Krishan Kandeepan from Year 10 was awarded a highly commended. Both Amy and Krishan spoke on the topic, ‘What makes a good parent’. Fellow Year 10 student Lulu Clinton delivered a very intellectual speech advocating the importance of acting on one’s goals and dreams. All three students’ speeches were of a high standard. Their topics were well-researched and informative.
On Monday 29 May, Year 8 student, Chaitra Avirneni, was awarded 3rd Highly Commended alongside Year 7 student, Anna Orr, who was also presented a certificate of Commendation. Fellow student Julia Barnett from Year 7 spoke confidently, presenting her well informed perspective on the topic, ‘Our Throw Away Society’. The girls spoke against twenty five talented students from schools across the region.
Both Amy and Chaitra have qualified to speak at the finals in Narromine later in June.
Debating Update
MIC Mrs Justina Holland
The debating season at Kinross Wolaroi is in full swing with the eight teams across three divisions completing their rounds for the HICES debating competition.
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sienna Whalan (Year 11) on being voted Captain of Debating for 2023 and Nina Smedley (YR 11) Vice Captain. The girls are strong assets as leaders of the Kinross Wolaroi team.
Our teams have been successful this year with several wins in all three rounds, recording only a few losses.
Round One saw all Kinross Wolaroi teams from Year 7 to 11 win their debates
Round Two took place at the beginning of Term Two and we won five of our eight debates across each division.
The final round concluded Thursday 25 May, where the teams also won five of their eight debates.
The Kinross Wolaroi Debating team is made up of skillful orators who have an excellent general knowledge and are able to argue tactfully their team’s case. They practice the skill of rhetoric and strategy regularly twice a week during lunch time meetings. This is evidenced through the excellent results the teams have recorded so far.
We await patiently the news of which teams will progress to the next stage of the competition.
The tally at the end of the first stage of the HICES competition is shown below.

HSC Geography – Urban Places
The Geography students and five exchange students travelled to Sydney to investigate the changing morphology of the world city. The first stop was Cabramatta where the students investigated first hand the “culture of place” within the suburb with a Yum Cha lunch. Students then travelled to the CBD and completed an urban transect starting at China Town and finishing at Circular Quay. Students stayed at the YHA at The Rocks where they witnessed the start of the VIVID festival from the roof top, it was spectacular to see the lights over the Opera House. After a ferry ride to Barangaroo and a walk of the Sydney Harbour foreshore students were rewarded with Sydney’s best gelato. That night we calculated the average step count which exceeded 23 000 steps or approximately 18km of walking through the urban jungle of Sydney.
On Tuesday students examined the spatial patterns of advantage and disadvantage with a guided 2.5-hour Kayak of middle harbour. Students then travelled to Marsden Park which is a case study of Suburbanisation.
Jessie Tudor a Year 12 student was quoted as saying, “Geography is NOT a subject, it’s a lifestyle choice,”
Overall it was a fantastic eating, walking and kayaking learning experience.
A special thankyou to Mr Waterson and Ms Symons for accompanying the students on the trip.
