Laing O’Rourke Inspiring STEM+ program

On Monday 26th of August, representatives from construction company Laing O’Rourke visited the Year 8 assembly and talked about their program to encourage more girls into engineering careers and the construction industry. We heard about different types of careers and from women already working in this field.

Students were encouraged to sign up for the program and every spot was filled very quickly. This program will run in 2020 and 2021 and involve engineering activities, site visits and talks from many different industry experts.

FIRST Lego League

20 students in years 7-10 have been working hard in preparation for this year’s competition. We have two projects underway that are looking at ways of minimising traffic congestion and ways of minimising heat transfer into the north-facing buildings at MGC.

We are seeing some great teamwork and some interesting robot designs. The robots (and their programmers) must complete challenges on this mat layout.

Melbourne Girls College will be competing at KIOSC in Wantirna on Wednesday 13th of November and hosting a regional event here on Saturday 16th of November.

Space camp 2019

On Tuesday 17th of September, 20 intrepid students will fly out of Melbourne to the USA where they will visit Orlando – Disney World, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Centre, Ifly – and the US Space and Rocket Centre/Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

I am sure they will have the most amazing experiences on this trip. Have a great time.
