Week 6 saw the celebration of reading, writing and all things book with MGC celebrating the CBCA’s Book Week! Throughout the week students and staff were invited to share their love of literacy and engage in a range of games, activities and talks:
Author Talks
The MGC Library hosted five speakers from a diverse range of professional backgrounds who spoke to students on issues of writing, publishing and graphic novels:
Dr Jodi McAlister, author of the Valentine series spoke on Writing Fantasy and exploring genres, and discussed developing interesting characters. Ben Ball, MGC parent, Council Member and the Publishing Director at Scribner Australia, spoke on the publication process and book publishing as a career. Jessica Walton (pictured above) spoke on Diverse World? Diverse Books!, discussing her experience as a disabled member of the LGBTQI+ community and her unusual path to authorship and publication. Bernard Caleo is a local graphic novelist and comic artist who spoke on the importance of being creative and developing graphic novels. Finally, Anna Morgan hosted a quick Young Adult quiz, discussed her creative writing process and spoke about her journey to publishing her debut novel All That Impossible Space.
A big thank you to all the authors for sharing their time and experience - it was fantastic to learn about the writing and publishing world from those who are so passionate about it!
Trivia
Book Week saw not one, not two – but three different trivia lunches! Monday saw the students heading back to Hogwarts to test their wizarding knowledge. Wednesday had the students showing off their general book knowledge, and the week of trivia culminated with a Friday Book Week Kahootz quiz in the library. Thank you to the Middle School Exec and Mr La Marca for your help in organizing the trivia, thank you to everyone who stopped by or took part, and of course, congratulations to our winners!
Book Recommendations
Staff and students alike were asked to find and display their favourite books from the MGC Library, and to fill out a "Why You Should Read This Book" slip to go inside the cover. We received an overwhelming number of responses from Staff and Students. It was great to see everyone getting excited about finding the books they recommended on display, and to see students choosing from the display for their own reading. Well done everyone!
Book Club Tea Party
The MGC Book Club celebrated Book Week with some sweet treats at the Book Club Tea Party. Over tea, cucumber sandwitches, lamingtons and cupcakes we discussed what we were reading and our all time favourite books.
