Yarra River Blitz
This Sunday was the Yarra (Birrarung) River Blitz clean up day starting, at the Richmond Boat House in the CBD. The Yarra River supplies 9 catchment dams and provides drinking water to about 2.6 million households. Clay deposits create a muddy appearance however, the Yarra River is a relatively clean waterway and is currently known as one of the cleanest capital city rivers in the world. Despite this, sadly like most volunteers, I retrieved more than 50 water bottles amongst straws, bottle caps, spray cans and so much more. This amount collected timesed by approximately 100 volunteers will have a hugely positive effect on our river.
It was a great day to be out in kayaks and canoes and to foster MGC's existing relationship with the Yarra Riverkeepers, as a portion of the plastic collected today is being stored by the Yarra River Keepers Association to be shredded, melted and moulded into furniture that will be used for our upcoming outdoor carbon neutral classroom.
Look out for the next Yarra River Blitz, which will be advertised in the MGC newsletter.
