Principal's Report

National Parks Scheme (NPS) Waste Plan

The local, national and international response to our Zero Waste initiative has been overwhelming with environmental group and media interest from New Zealand, the U.S., Perth and Sydney. The entire sustainability team lead by Lucy Skelton, Lucy Vogel, Daisy Batten, Veronique Villis, Abby Vogel, Paula McIntosh and Andrew Vance have been working on the initiative since the beginning of this year. Their detailed phase out plan and action research approach is exemplary. The key aspect of the work I am most proud of is student agency. The scheme is lead by our students who with maturity and intelligence know we need to actively tackle global environmental issues rather than just talk about solutions. The ambition of becoming a zero waste to landfill school by the end of 2020 and massively reducing our environmental impact is an enormous one but we are committed to the attempt.

Please join us tonight, Thursday 5 September, in the Library at 6pm for more information on the National Parks Scheme.

Kindness and respect in action

The positive work our students do extends to their commutes to and from school,

I'm just writing this in praise of your students this afternoon at about 3.30pm.

My 3 year old son and I were on the train with many MGC students heading towards the city when he was ill. I asked a girl from your school next to me to help as my hands were full. She willingly got up. Her friends also joined in to offer tissues, help me fumble through my pram for wipes … they also took care of my son.… and they ensured all was well before sitting down again.

I'd like to thank these wonderful girls for being such wonderful help. The world is a much better place thanks to kind and selfless young women like them.

Yours sincerely, Lyn and her son Graham

Congratulations to other trail blazers also! At a Weightlifting challenge held last Sunday, ten students competed bringing home four gold medals, two silver and three bronze. Many thanks to Andrew Beck who devotes so much time to this valued initiative.

Father’s Day Breakfast

The Parents’ Association were, yet again, amazing hosts for over 160 fathers, uncles, grandfathers and significant males in the lives of our students. Sincere thanks to Gailean Hammond, Robynne Smith, Kirsty Illes, Anna Makin, Danni from our café, MGC office and all P.A. members involved.

The 25th Anniversary Cocktail Party

As I write the preparations for our gala night celebrating 25 years of education at Melbourne Girls’ College are underway. A detailed report will be given in the 19 September newsletter. All of our events are yet another sign of the vibrancy of our school and community.

Kind regards,

Karen
