Monday evening’s parent workshop on Cyber Safety and Google Drive was an affirming example of parental engagement and the partnership we enjoy with our parent community. The thirty one parents who attended, left the evening well informed of the pitfalls of the cyber world and more knowledgeable about the use of Google as an educational tool and the range of capabilities it has in its suite of tools.
Thanks to the band of staff, parent helpers and organisers, who again very successfully brought together the diocesan swimming carnival last Thursday in Moree. The feedback from the visitors was very positive. Along with us, the communities of Mungindi and Walgett are especially appreciative of the location of this carnival.
Aligning with the Catholic School’s Office Strategic Plan 2016-2018, one of the school’s strategic goals in 2016 is an increased focus on mental wellbeing. Wellbeing is described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the state in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
In a school context, student wellbeing is a student's level of satisfaction about the quality of their life at school. A high level of school satisfaction and wellbeing is characterised by positive feelings and attitudes, positive relationships with peers and teachers, resilience and satisfaction with themselves and their learning experiences at school (National Safe Schools Framework resource manual, p101).
Children and adolescents today, more than ever are faced with a myriad of challenges in their lives ranging from parental separations, divorce, illness and death, complex family matters, negative body image, friendship tussles – just to name a few. At times we are all challenged to maintain a balanced wellbeing. Wellbeing is said to be determined by genetics, actions and thoughts, as well as circumstances. It is said that as much as 40% of our wellbeing on a day to day basis is due to our thoughts and actions, with only 10% due to circumstances.
For some time now our diocesan schools have had a free on-site counselling support service available, to support student wellbeing. This service is provided by the diocese, via Centacare, to assist our students. Following referral processes, a student receives six one hour sessions with the possibility of continued support. Parents may request this referral, or at times it is recommended to the family by the school. If you consider that this opportunity may benefit your child, please contact the school for more information.
