Hope
This term the value we are focusing on is HOPE!
What is hope?
* a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.
* a feeling of trust.
* to want something to happen or be the case.
According to Greek mythology, the first woman on Earth, Pandora, was given a box that she was not to open under any circumstance. Too curious to resist, she opened it, and all of the evils of the world flew out: hate, pain, destructiveness, starvation. When Pandora saw what she had done, she closed the box before the last thing in there could escape. That last thing was hope.
Hope is the belief that circumstances in the future will be better. It's not a wish that things will get better, but an actual belief, even when there may be no evidence that anything will change. Hope can encompass a wide variety of beliefs -- everything from a high school student hoping for an A in algebra to a cancer patient hoping for a cure.
What do we hope for our children and what do our children hope for themselves?
Children's hopes are often focused on the 'now' and within their own world, and as parents we focus on the 'now' and look more intently at the future.
Today I worked with the SRC to make a list of what they thought the meaning of hope was. This very intuitive group talked about love, trust, risk taking, being positive and believing in yourself and others. All behaviours we, as adults, strive to achieve as well.
The attached clip looks at how children reflect on their hopes and dreams as individuals and reflect on what others may think hope is. Putting things into perspective is something we can all do at times!
