Teaching & Learning

This week we will have some celebratory reflections of a few successful nights that we have hosted at Concord School. We will also chat a little about the semesters learning as we quickly approach the end of term. We will wrap up today with some information about the learning we are looking forward to in the coming semester.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Concord Applied Learning Program

On Thursday the 8th of June Concord School hosted our very first parent information evening to discuss an applied learning program for some students in secondary 7-10. The evening was a fantastic success as it gave our teachers a great opportunity to express to the parent community how passionate they are about the benefits of the program. Fiona, Mark, Gwenda, Kris, Helen, Sam B, Marisa and Kirsten all talked about the advantages of an applied learning program that will utilise the Victorian Curriculum to explicitly teach fundamental skills to our students.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers who gave up their time to support our community to help our kids to be the best they can be. We will be hosting further information evenings at the end of the year for those parents who will be new to the Secondary 7-8 section. Just keep an eye out around November for information regarding these.

Community Connections Night

On Tuesday the 20th of June the Secondary 11-12 team held a community connections night to celebrate all the wonderful learning that has taken place in the section this semester. It was absolutely wonderful to see the large number of students and families who attended and were treated to a fabulous evening. Many students were put to work during the evening on various posts that included barbeque, coffee/tea making or instructing visitors how to access the activities. The evening culminated in a visual spectacular that featured videos or Photostories that celebrated the sections successful learning experiences. It was wonderful to see the independent, successful, happy and resourceful young adults from Secondary 11-12 strut their stuff with such confidence.

A very big thankyou to all the staff. I always feel very lucky to be part of the Concord community where our staff donate their own time continuously because it makes a difference to the children we work with. I can’t wait to see what the next semester brings.

Integrated Units Semester 1 & 2

This semester the overarching content of our integrated units across the school was identity. Our Lower Primary section learned all about the different community helpers and how they promote a sense of wellbeing for us. Our Upper Primary section looked at identity through an environmental lense inquiring as to how our actions impact our environment. Secondary 7-8 looked at their own body and how it works while Secondary 9-10 looked at Australia as a Nation and how our identity is entwined with the environment we live in. It was terrific to see our students engage in their inquiry and participate in a range of activities to broaden their understandings.

Next term our units all focus on environments. I can’t wait to see how our teachers and students build their knowledge on this scientific journey.
