Middle School

From the Head of Middle School

Congratulations to the following students who have received Half or Full Colours:

VACS Clubs

On Wednesday, Middle School students started their VACS clubs for Term Two. After some wild weather earlier in the week, the sun shone through and everyone enjoyed doing a different activity or learning a new skill. Some Year Eleven Peer Support leaders also joined in with the Year Sevens to create some great moments across the Sub Schools.

Chapel

This week at Chapel the theme was based around “Doing the Right Thing.” Below are two reflections from our students about the topic.

"Doing the right thing is something people often don’t get recognised for when they should. It’s hard to find motivation to do good acts, when you know nobody will see it, but it really makes a difference. Doing the right thing has large benefits for the person on the receiving end of your deed, but also for you. I know this is true because I have done right things and felt better after it, even though nobody else knew about it. An example of this is when I did the simple act of picking up someone’s wallet at the shop and giving it to the customer service. I didn’t get anything directly back for doing this, but I felt happier and hopeful that someone would return the favour if I ever misplaced something. The person who would have lost their wallet would have been feeling stressed and worried, and that small gesture would have helped them. All of this relates to integrity for me, and I believe that a person’s morals are measured by what they do when no one is watching. As Albert Einstein once said, ‘always do what is right; this will gratify some and astonish the rest’. It’s not going out and choosing the easiest decision but taking the time to follow your gut and doing the right thing will keep you standing out from the crowd." - Imogen | Year Nine

When I was planning what to say in this reflection, I googled what “doing the right thing” meant, to get me started. It came up with:  'making a choice between possibilities in favour of something that benefits another, with honest and the best intentions.'

Although I may agree with this, I think everyone has different opinions, so I asked some of my friends what they thought it meant. They said:
“Being kind and making the effort to do something for someone else”,
“Doing something without expecting anything in return, because good things come to those who wait”, and
“Taking the fair and kind option, not the easy one”.

In most of the answers I received, they involved doing something for the benefit of someone else, however, doing the right thing can also make you feel happier. It can raise your self-esteem and make you feel better about yourself, but you also tend to get what you give, so if you are kind to someone, they will usually be kind to you.
Doing the right thing doesn’t have to be a massive gesture, it can be as simple as paying a compliment, owning up to something or following through on a promise, and it can make you and the people on the receiving end feel a lot better. - Madeleine | Year Nine
